Ok so my friend has been saying that Cadian shock troopers and Ork boyz are not worth it. Is this true? and if its not what are some convincing arguments to say that they are worth it. Help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Your post is pretty vague. What do you mean by 'worth it'?

Do you mean the box of models are too expensive? Or that in-game, they cost too many points, or aren't very useful?

Oh sorry points wise.

Ork (shoota) boyz are some of the most cost effective models in the game

There is no such thing as a Cadian shock-trooper in-game.

They can serve as Platoon Infantry Squads or Veteran Squads.

And they can also count as Penal Legion. And it isn't the worst point to be made by Bryllcream, because depending on which kind of troop he was asking about by saying shock trooper changes the answer. If he meant Penal Legion, a resounding 'noooooo'. One of the other two? Much more debateable.

Well lets run some numbers, were going to do some points to damage ratios.

We`ll use marines as the target as they make up for 50% of the armies.

So in order to kill 10 marines at 24 inches:

Marines with bolters - 90 marines (90 shots 60 hits 30 wounds) - 1350pts worth
Ork shoota boyz - 90 orks (180 shots, 60 hits, 30 wounds) - 540pts
Guardsman - 180 guardsmen (180 shots, 90 hits, 30 wounds) - 900pts
Tau fire warrior - 90 fire warriors (90 shots, 45 hits, 30 wounds) - 810pts
Dark Eldar warrior - 90 warriors (90 shots, 60 hits, 30 wounds) - 810pts

Now lets try that with rapid fire:

Marines - 45 marines - 675pts
Ork shoota boyz- 90 orkz - 540pts
Guardsmen - 90 guardsmen - 450pts
Fire warrior - 45 fire warriors - 405pts
Dark Eldar warrior - 45 warriors - 405pts

Knock the decimal point over for per kill point ratio. Now keep in mind shoota boyz can move and fire and have a constant 24 inch threat range, giving them the edge as they can easily assault after firing at rapid fire range. Orks win IMO.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Foot lists did get a lot worse in 6th edition. You can still make a go of it by gunlining them from behind an aegis, but it's still not the best, and it's a boring army both to play with, and to play against.

It's possible to play foot hordes nowadays, but you're definitely playing the game in challenge mode, especially if your opponents know what small arms are and how to use them.

That and they take forever to assemble, paint, unpack, deploy, move, shoot, repack, etc. etc...

One problem with your chart ravenous, shoota boyz can only shoot out to 18 inches.

Also, it entirely depends on how you use the unit. Plain ok guardsmen with no upgrades whatsoever are almost entirely useless. But take 40 of em, give all 4 sarges power axes and meltabombs with a commissar lord, and they're suddenly much scarier.

Same with Ork boyz. A 10 man shoota mob won't do much. A 30 boy mob however will wreck anything T7 or AV11 and below

Standard guardsmen and boyz are 2 of the best troop choices in the game. Especially shoota boyz that are either in a battlewagon or under KFF cover.
