Can anyone point me to sources of information for sects of humanity that are actually struggling to improve their situation rather than just accept the dreary grimdark future? I'm sure there has to be some pockets in the rather large galaxy out there...

I'm guessing they joined the Tau and got wiped out by the inquisition during the Damocles Gulf Crusade. Who knows...I've never heard of any.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

I remember a small snip in the Chaos Daemon Codex where a radical group of humans on an isolated planet eradicated all disease. Granted....Nurgle promptly got mad and destroyed it....

One thing that makes it more difficult for such enclaves to exist is the danger of psykers and demonic possession. The Imperium's screening system and the Black Ships, as horrific as they are, are responsible for keeping planets from being eaten alive by demons. If a hypothetical progressive civilization tries to allow psykers their freedom or, worse yet, tries to enhance their abilities through experimentation, they're going to be consumed by the Warp before they can figure out what they're doing wrong.

They're called Tzeentchian cultists.

Hope feeds Tzeentch, who will do horrible things to your planet to reward you for your service. Ergo, Hope is evil, and you should stop having it, but you can't have despair because then Nurgle gets a free ride. You could be angry about this, but that'd just get Khorne's jollies off. And heck you can't even get your own jollies off without Slaanesh giggling and farting out some daemons. And if you manage to avoid all that, some genestealers might infiltrate your planet and bring a hive fleet crashing down on you any way.

Think of a daemon incursion like a fart you don't quite trust... you could either toot a little puff of air, bellow a great effluvium, or utterly sh*t your pants and cry as it floods down your leg.

This is possibly the best thing I have ever read in my life.

This is Daemonic Cheese:

3000 Pts
2500 Pts
1000 Pts (And growing)

I'd put a quote here, but XKCD would have a better one.

Well there was the Children's Crusade, named because of its popularity with the younger generations, that preached for a galaxy of tolerance and booked passage to Terra in their billions. Of course some ended up as pirate-food, but most just disappeared into the warp for about a thousand years and emerged near Terra as twisted abominations.
