Subject: So many Questions and Comments...Angel Exterminatus
So, I went to Origins over in Columbus, and there was a Games Workshop stand with most of the Horus Heresy Books. Sadly, nothing on Tyranids, and no Iron Within. However, they had a ton of Horus Heresy books, so I grabbed the only other one on the Iron Warriors, Angel Exterminatus. First off, I just want to say, that for my first Warhammer 40k (Technically 30k, I suppose) book, I was both blown away and completely horrified at various parts. So, in order to try and divide this up in nice neat little areas, prepare for a lot of spoilers.
Fabius Vile
Spoiler:
1. First off, HOLY . Was he always like this, or is this the Chaos talking?
2. If he was always like that, how on Terra did he wind up as an Apothecary of a legion?
3. If he wasn't like this, what happened? Did someone break his ant farm as a kid?
Perturabo
Spoiler:
1. So, having read this, I get the distinct impression that even at this point, the Lord of Iron would actually still have a decent option for rejoining the loyalist forces. I mean if he got his respect and apology from Dorn plus recognition for all the deeds they did that the other legions took the credit from.
Fulgrim
Spoiler:
1. So he killed Ferrus, and absorbed all his memories, etc. So...1 off highlander reference or do all the primarchs have this ability?
Falk
Spoiler:
1. Who is the face that kept staring back at Falk?
Soulaka
Spoiler:
1. Soulaka has the title Honourable. What exactly does that mean since he is an Apothecary, and Fabius called him a Master Mason? I don't get how these things are related.
2. Fabius kills him, the only Iron Warrior on the floor, and no one notices when he takes the body with him and Soulaka goes missing?
Abranxe and Ruen
Spoiler:
1. So, unless consort means something else in 30k, I guess this means that marines can love. Honestly, not surprised it came from the Emperor's Children first.
The Heart of Iron
Spoiler:
1. So, this is a truly epic machine capable of so much. So, the question remains, did it survive into the 40k times? I seriously wonder, if it did, what would happen if you dropped that on the Ultramarines Primarch?
"There is a cancer eating at the Imperium. With each decade it advances deeper, leaving drained, dead worlds in its wake. This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

Just to get the ball rolling (and since using a mobile doesn't give much allowance for detailed replies) I'll just give a brief answer about Soulaka.
If you have only read this one novel you will not have got reference here to McNeill's Iron Warrior anti-hero character Honsou. Reputedly created post Heresy from Imperial Fist gene-seed it seems he's a true son of Perturabo after all. I assume 'Honourable' Soulaka's name is more a contrivance to give fans an easter egg here than anything else.
I also thought it unlikely/harsh to have Soulaka killed by Bile in that way as he seemed a generally decent chap for an Iron Warrior. There was a lot of confusion allowing Bile his opportunity so a little suspension of disbelief covers that scene I suppose.

I'll admit, it's a little strange that you chose this book as your first 40k novel. Technically it's book 23 in the Horus Heresy series and is playing off a rather large number of events that have happened with Fulgrim, Fabius, and the Iron Warriors at Istvaan, not to mention the half dozen or more references to the 40k Iron Warrior series.

Well, Origins being right next door, I drove over and decided not to push my luck at the good selection of books they had. I was chatting it up with the guys at the FW/GW stand, asking around if they had any of the 'Nid books, and they said it was mostly HH. Think there was a Ghost book or two. Anyhow, inquired on what they had that focused on the Iron Warriors, and they pointed me to Angel Exterminatus.
