So, I have to be in New York on 3rd September for work. And it turns out it's THE SAME PRICE for me to fly to Washington, then onward to NYC a few days later, as it is to just go to NYC.

So, should I go to the Nova Open? Do I already know any US Dakkanauts going? Are there any other UK-based Dakkanauts planning to go? What tournament/events should I attempt to play (40k-based, please). How does this thing work?

Also, why does the website say 'Washington DC' and then 'Arlington, Virginia' right next to that? Those are two different places, right?

Not really. Dc stradles the stateline. And alexandria is a seperate cit the run right into dc(one metro area).

As for who you know i don't know which dakkites you know but there is normally a large turnout by dakkites in general. For the events the gt is fun but you could also do the narrative which i heard was a blast last year.

There's lots of us going from Dakka, and it's an absolute blast. Last year was my first and I bought my ticket as soon as it went up this year.

The GT is awesome, it's 1850 and the coolest thing is that at the midpoint of the GT, every player gets re-bracketed based on their record and their victory path. So for the second half of the GT you'll only play people who should be right on your play level. (I.E if you go undefeated, you'll only play the other top dogs who managed to do the same. If you split your games you'll play with guys who did likewise). It works out really well and there's incentive to win your bracket as each bracket winner gets prize support.

There's also the narrative at night which has some really sweet terrain based on Washington DC monuments. It's open to forgeworld units so if you have some bad boys you want to put on the table this is a perfect way to do so, though plenty of people play without any.

There's also the Trios event which is 3 man teams so you might be able to find a team in need of a 3rd player. Basically your games alternate between playing a 1v1 or doing a 2v2 with one of your two teammates.

Ah - my US geography isn't great... thanks.

Is the best plan to fly into Reagan and stay at the 'special offer' Hyatt?

Yeah, I saw the Grand Tournament - presumably, that will take up my entire weekend if I play that?

EDIT: Thanks morgendonner - so presumably you could play both the Grand Tournament AND the Narrative?

I would definitely recommend staying at the Hyatt. It's super convenient because you can just roll out of bed and go downstairs and start playing without having to find parking / lug your army from a parking garage to the hotel every day.

Yes, the GT and Narrative run at different times. The full schedule should be on the website.

I think the only events that interfere with each other are the Narrative and the Trios event.

And flying into Regan is best. You do that and you don't need to rent a car. A shuttle takes you to the hotel and food is in super easy walking distance. And if you want to head into DC proper the metro is half a block from the hotel.

And after the changes Mike got them to make a the Hyatt after the first year last year was excellent.

The airport is super close to the Hotel. The hotel is very nice and for the group rate, pretty nice. The event is fun, You can play in the GT for 40k and one of the nighttime events (probably the narrative for peopl enot in trios)

Lots of gaming, cool vendors.

Super good use of your time if you are looking to get a bunch of games in. You will easily get 12-15 games in over 3-4 days.

Def try to attend - and also on flying into Reagan and staying at the Hyatt. Not only is it super convenient staying in the same hotel the con is in, he's also got a rate worked out that is far cheaper then anything else you'll find in the area (I believe 85/night, which is pretty stellar for DC, and it's a nice place).

I'll be there as always, along with plenty of others I'm sure.

As an aside, to your initial question, since Dakkanauts are providing plenty of fun info, we have 6 registered UK attendees as present. There are also 26 seminars, most of them scheduled to align with the GT if you wish to take them AND play in the larger 40k event.

I think you should definitely go if you can. I've been twice and I would go back this year except I'm not a big fan of 6th.

2012- stopped caring
Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)
Adepticon 2011- Combat Patrol Best General

OKAY. Thanks for the information, guys. I've purchased a weekend pass and a 40k GT ticket, so I guess I'm going. It'll be a nice holiday before a month of NYC opera.

So, now to decide if I should play the Narrative or try and find a team for the trios.

Oh, and decide which army to bring, build some lists, etc, etc, etc...

Hey buddy, I will be heading over on the 28th aug wednesday and coming back on the 2nd sept monday, i can give you flight details if you wanted to hop on with me on virgin airlines, heading out from Heathrow

I will also be staying at the Hyatt, currently booked as a single, but I can swap that to two single beds in one room, would be happy to split the costs halfway. Reason I am leaving early is I will be in the Invitationals aswell, so yeah, pm me if you're interested.

I may reply late as I am about to leave for Cyprus for two weeks, so if they have WiFi I'll be sure to answer

Cheers,
Alex Harrison
