So I have picked up AC:5 for the first time in ages after seeing Pacific Rim. (go see this if you haven't)
I have just signed up for Xbox Live for the first time with my 360 (I know right!) as SickSix83
I am hoping that online play opens a lot of the options I can't access in offline mode like buying NEW parts for freaking sake.
So I am waiting to download the 650MB patch on my dial-up like DSL connection and am wondering a few things?
1. Can you only get access to 'new' parts when connected online?
2. Can you leave/join teams as you wish?
3. Anyone want to help out an online newb? I am FL based and a 'weekend' player. Please hit me up on Live if you'd like be badgered with questions about this game that I've apparently been missing most of the content on.

Yes you can leave as you wish, joining is up to the team, most will need accept recruits.
Ah ok, well how high to I have to level?
Also, I am to understand that the order missions somewhat follow the story missions, but are they a one to one or are you supposed to do like 5 order missions between story missions?

Not really, I think I did most of the story missions before touching the order missions, only going through a few order missions when I need some cash or w/e
You don't have to play online, but your online and offline progress are separate, and you gain absolutely nothing from playing offline.
Your best bet would be to find a good team, but the biggest problem with AC5 is that Namco Bandai didn't give a crap, and the game pretty much died out not too long after the release.
Real shame too, since as far as its gameplay is concerned, it's definitely my favourite AC game.

Pretty much this.
Bamco just went.. ooh... niche game with tiny community... yeah.. let's split servers.
And then after they did that, they starved the North American version of updates for months.
Not to mention that the lack of instruction was appalling (and that's okay for some games, but with a game as incredibly deep as Armored Core, you really need a good manual). In the Japanese version, they got an instruction book that was over 60 pages long in full colour. Over here, we get a 2 page black-and-white pamphlet that doesn't even properly explain the controls.
The sad truth is that this game was destined to fail at launch because Bamco wanted it to. The only reason they even decided to publish it is because they have a Fromsoftware signed under them, and the only reason for that is because of Dark Souls. I have a strong feeling that they decided to brush this one under the rug (which is a shame, since it's so incredibly good when you actually have a community for it) and tell From to hurry up on the next Souls game.

I used to be a member of the GameFAQs team on the PS3 version. I was probably the best duelist in the group, and in team matches, I was one hell of a sniper hunter.
I ended up writing a few interesting articles, such as the impact of arm stability on fire rate and accuracy, as well as on the effects of overweighting.
That said, I haven't played in a long time. The GFAQs team ended up breaking up, and I did run for a while as a mercenary, but there just wasn't a strong enough community out there. I had trouble even finding free matches.

They could have saved this entire game if they made the decision to run the American, European, and Japanese versions of the game on the same server. But that would have probably been too much work for the guys at Bamco.
The best part about AC4/fa was fighting Japanese players. I could easily crush most Western players in a match back in those days, but the Japanese players gave me a real run for my money. The funniest part about it being that by and large, the Japanese players were awful at actually designing their ACs.
I remember one match where a Japanese player absolutely shredded me, and we traded AC designs. I saw what he used, and it was absolute trash. He ended up using my own design against me in our next match, and it was not pretty for me.
Really wish I could have awesome moments like that again.
I'd have to say that my best AC5 moment was during one of my first team matches as a sniper hunter. The other team's sniper was really good, and they had us pinned down pretty badly. They also had a bunch of heavy ACs guarding their sniper.
As the sniper hunter, I was built to be fast as hell, so I ended up rushing down the far side of the map (it was the canyon level with that lovely side path) before the enemy team would notice I was gone, popped up behind the sniper, and fought 4 heavy ACs at once with my own which was essentially nothing more than two hand cannons strapped to a booster with duct tape. I didn't quite manage to kill the sniper, but I managed to bring him to very near death and break up the enemy formation, allowing my team to jump in and clean them all out.
I ended up changing my design a bit to be a little more well-rounded after that, and was more successful at my role because of it, but nothing beat the rush of that first successful sniper hunt.

I think they eventually were, mind you, I only used that machine at the very start, soon switched to light-biped just for the challenge.
But yeah, another reason the game failed so fast... by the time we got it, japan had over 5 patches. We had none, first patch came 3 months after release when everyone already quit.
I remember when the community was actually asking Bamco about the patches. They repeatedly lied about the content we had, saying we were actually up to date with the Japanese version when it clearly wasn't the case (we didn't even have the invasion bosses!). It was actually kind of disgusting.

Yep, there's a reason I'm happy that Dark Souls 2 will be on PC.
I currently have a horrible selection of parts. I guess the secret to levelling is grinding invasion missions.
I'm level 28 right now. I get 'there are new parts available' messages here and there but I have a hard time finding them and still the only things I can buy are 'repaired' parts.

They were the fastest firing Battle Rifles (if I remember correctly, they also had great range too), with the most stable leg and arm units. It's a pretty crazy combination, but I'm pretty sure that setup was nerfed pretty hard.
