Alright, I proxied up a game using the assault cannon-heavy infantry force that I had planned to bring to this tournament. I won but it was boring.
This next list is basically a jacked up version of my original footslogging army.
What do you think?

I don't entirely agree. While I wouldn't neccessarily set up my Dread's that way, I'd also much rather lose them than lose Terminators. Unless an opponent gets extremely lucky, those three Dread should weather at least a few rounds of shooting.

wimmins, do you honestly think that Mortis is worth the points? I'm curious as to why you included it in the list.

I dont know what you are think ezzeran, your typical guard list at 1500 pts has more than enough longrange fire power to take them down in one turn, even more so if they drop, because they can come in peicemeal and be vulnerable to as much firepower as the general wants to throw at them.

I don't see drop pods in this list, Elnicko. That means it's a footslogging list and those Dreads are kitted out for long range fighting. Any footslogging Deathwing commander worth his salt won't be exposing those dreads to all that much firepower.

And again, the more fire the Dread's take, the less that the Terminator's take.

Most of the Guard's big guns aren't what would worry me, though. It's the massed small arms fire I'd be concerned about.

Ezzeran is on the money - this looks like a footslogging list and footslogging dreads with the terminators works well. I also question the Mortis. I would ather see a LaS/MiS Ven dread and a regular plasma dread - with the points saved you could have 2 six man squads and you can make your cyclone squad the Epistolary's command squad. Bumps you up to 21 models and makes you a little better for VPs. Other than that this is a list that I would play at the same point level. DSing at 1500 point is a bit dicey and I would cut back on he teleport homers and auspexes ( maybe use on one squad ) as well to get those two extra termies.
I don't see how this list is ' less boring ' than an all assault cannon list. It is a bit more flexible though. I like a squad with CMLs ( I will not debate AC vs. CML again ) as they provie a little range. Along with your las dread you will not waste firepower from the start.
Your Epistolary is almost identical to the one I use only I have force weapon and storm shield - style counts, LoL

i play deathwing myself at 1850 but it is themed around terminators so i mostly avoid dreads. personally i think you make good use of them-the plasma canon arm is very dark angels fluffy as is the mortis which i like seeing on the table since not many people field it.

the las/missle tankhunting venerable is about as good as you can get with that skill on a dread.

 

if you have the points and want to add insult to injury make the CML unit the HQ command squad and give them all tank hunter. it gives you a rather nasty stand off shooting force....as i recall only the command squad can get tank hunter or furious charge skills

i say proxy/play test it and see how you like it.

i am assuming you are going shooty with the dreads so just missles or are you putting a CCW inthere somewhere?

Wimmins, definitely not the army list I'd bring at such a low point value (Deathwing really begin becoming competitive at 1850+, in my opinion), but if you think you'll have fun with it, I can't begrudge you that. Personally, winning becomes a bit more important at a tournament for me than playing with a fun army list. Sometimes you can do both, but the Deathwing isn't as forgiving as most SM army lists.

Look out for armies with lots of assault cannons, and with the way they are right now, you may run into some.
