My friend demanded a giant mountain for our gaming table, so I obliged him. I used a different technique than the usual pink foam plan and I'm pretty happy with the result, so I thought I'd share.

Get a Base - I used a piece of MDF that I had lying around.
Build an Internal Structure - I had some wood blocks lying around, so I stacked them up into the general shape that we wanted the mountain to be in. I screwed them all in place with a drill.
Spray Insulating Foam - I covered the blocks with an entire spray can of insulating foam, then waited a day for it to dry.
Shape the Mountain - Using a hacksaw blade, I cut several flat surfaces for my gun-wielding dudes to walk around on without falling over.
Shape the Base - Using a jigsaw, I cut away the parts of the base that I didn't need. I then used a belt sander to make a nice slow grade from the table to the base.
Texture the Mountain - I slathered wood filler all over the mountain and the exposed base. This creates the texture and makes it sturdier. I waited a day for the wood filler to dry, then went at it with some coarse sand paper. The sand paper will take off the sticky-outy bits and also make some cool sedimentary-looking textures in the dirt.
Add Rocks - My friend bought a plaster mold rock kit from the model train store. The large square rocks on the side of the mountain are the ones I made from that kit. They are pretty delicate, so I'm not totally sold on them, but they do look cool. The rest of the rocks are just rocks from my yard. I attached most of them with wood filler. Some of the smaller ones were attached with tacky glue.
Paint - I stole some cheap acrylic paints from my wife and drybrushed and washed it in various shades of brown, black, tan, almost white, orange, and red until I was happy.
Add Greenery - I painted watered-down tacky glue wherever I wanted greenery and then covered the thing in various shades of grass from the model train store. And for good measure, I added a tree.

Well, that's my very first Dakka post. Hope you dig it!
