Some Tomb World in some galaxy by that one thing in that one place (or Minnesota for nosy people)

Just like the title says a scratch built pylon. I forgot to take the initial pics but they weren't anything any imagination couldn't picture.

I started with a 3/4 inch thick sheet of pink insulation foam and cut out a circle 8" in diameter for the base (would somebody mind measuring the base of their own pylon? I am still at the point where I can lengthen it enough to fit any size.)

I then created a circle inside of the current circle about 4 and 3/4" in diameter for the part that the legs extend from. (Again any measurements would be helpful)

I then cut out the legs with the center lines of them being 60 degrees apart and made the legs about an inch and a quarter wide

I will begin cutting and sanding out the curves of the pylons feet and inner base and also lengthen/ shorten any areas that need it.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh and greenstuffing any bubbles or areas that I cut too far into after I cut out the curves

Its an apocalypse unit

Either way it will probably be used as terrain when I'm not using it in apocalypse.

Its proabably one of the more easier models to scratch build since it is basically a globe minus the plaet in the middle

The pink foam you have will dissolve from most glues and spray paint. If you base coat it before you glue stuff together you'll avoid this effect.

Looks like a good start though, I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

I plan on using magnets for most of the assembly and dry fitting/green stuffing where that is not possible.

As for paint I will be using all acrylic paints for both primer and actual painting.

Awesome!

I love the pylon, and have worked on real and poxy ones myself.

On the foam, instead of green stuff, look for air dry model clay - it is a bit easier to work with on foam than expoxy putty.

Sanding/shaping any kind of putty on foam can be a challenge as the foam is so much softer, and will usually wear much quicker than the putty - it can be managed, but is tricky.

Some have found success in cladding the model in plasticard t ohelp with texture, give panel lines or a better surface for putty.

This also helps with magnetization - where the foam bond point usually fails when working with magnets.

Keep it up, and can't wait to see it!

Finally got back around to this, I just finished sanding the legs and curves to the base. Next I will start cutting out the ring and sanding it out.

Looking great. I personally love using insulation foam for my models. Not sure if you have one (probably not judging from the pictures) but a hot wire cutter makes these projects so much easier and faster. Im not sure what the name of the company is (many FLGS carry this brand of glue with their store's name/address on them, it comes with a pink top) but I know you can buy foam-safe superglue.
