Subject: Sentient Necrons?

Not so long ago, the Necrons were introduced in the first chapters of the entire WH40k backstory. as a race of robots commanded by evenmore malignous beings. the C'tan. the robots were once an entire race of humanoids who hated the Old Ones.
also the C'tan was once described as 'alternate gods rivaling the big four of the Chaos', said to exists in several numbers but after the primodal wars with THE OLD ONES. they cannibilized each other and later fell prey to one of Old One's creation, the Eldars... yet only four C'tan survived, yet not to be seen again until M41, while Necrons lost all of its sentients forever,
Accordin' to Lexicanum (again!!) the Necrons became more egypt ish, they became more 'humane' and not entirely controlled by collective hive minds of malevolent gods. but a complex Imperial heirachy similar to the IoM. the updated sources revealed that after they and their gods finally defeated the Old Ones. the last Necrontyr (the name of mortal race that later became Necrons) leader did ousted the C'tans. (!) broken them into fragments of once indestructible selves... (the C'tan shards). only to found out that the Eldar picked up the torch left over by the Old Ones. the war between the then rising Eldar against the battered Necrons became a losing ones. the leader ordered all remaining Necrons to hibernate. while the leader himself, burdened by guilt due to crimes he brought upon his fellow race... a perpetual slavery, broke the command protocols and left the galaxy along with the a handful of bodyguards. never to be seen again until much recently.
So
1. did the Necrons actually reclaimed its sentiences in the new edition? did the C'tans try to manipulate the Necrons oncemore?.. the 5th edition Necron codex gives each individual necron (leaders) a name, one that based on Ancient Egypt.
2. Did the GW realized that C'tan can't make a worthy rivals to Chaos big four? or can't figure out how to make them as 'godly' as the four Chaos gods? so they re-write the entire Necrons history and make them more humane (so to differentiate them from 'Nids, further the same leader is said to hate 'Nids too! and recognized them as an urgent big threat). and suggested that they ousted its very own 'gods'. also it appears that the late Necron backstory was inspired by Hollywood things. correct?
3. And did this retconnings made changes on two following concepts too?
3.1 "Omnishiah the Machine God is C'tan"
3.2 "Tyranid Hivemind is one of the surviving Old Ones, plotting a reveng against the Necrons and C'tan"

The Necrons were retconned to justify this:

Only the high ranking necrons (lords) are sentient. This was also a bit in the old codex. The lower ranking ones (warriors) are little more than machines. I don't understand #2. What do you mean by hollywood? Yes, I believe it was said somewhere by one of the devs that having 2 "kill them all" races was a tad redundant, so they gave the necrons a different MO. However, as a nod to the old codex, they kept the existence of genocidal crons in the form of the Destroyer Curse, the Flayer Curse and dysnasties such as the severed. The C'tan in the old codex were ridiculous. A powerful god like entity that could be used on the field and downed with sniper fire? That's just ridiculous. So they went for the Avatar of Khaine approach; have the C'tan on the field be shattered parts of the Star Gods. No idea what you mean about the big 4; the C'tan in the old book were portrayed as being strong as the big 4...in the material universe. Which hasn't changed. 3.1 Is still possible. In fact, the likely hood of the Emperor of mankind beating the dragon and imprisoning is even greater now, as it could have just been a shard. 3.2 Is a complete fan made fabrication. There is no basis in the fluff for that.

They were retconned before the BA and Necron 5th codexes were released.
Xenology is the first book to have talking Necrons with a bigger plot than "kill the living".

I thought they retconned the fluff of crons only purpose of 'kill the living", so they could advance their plot, and allow players to have their own crons.

Newcrons certainly do have more options for armies these days, yes.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised. |

Pretty much this. They changed the C'tan a bit, but only so that there's a good reason why you can field them.
The didn't have to take their FTL tech though. That pretty much invalidated BFG

Heh, fair enough.
They could have at least not made them so dependent on the webway. I think that place is getting a little crowded now that there's three races using it.

From 1d4chan:
While we're on the subject of the fluff, there's a quick reference to the Blood Angels Codex on the "Necron Timeline" page. It's one sentence long and talks about how the Silent King "reluctantly" teams up with the Blood Angels to fight Tyranids

Battle of Gehena, the Blood Angels VS Necrons became a tought stalemate. only to be terminated by the arrival of fresh Tyranids which proved to be superior to both.
Unwilling to be devoured, the two bitter enemies united against the voracious foe, the redirected wraths perfomed a series of overkill. shook the will of hivemind.
and so Gehenna is saved, with a big price. the contested planet had to be left vacant. unclaimed by either side, yet it's better than let the blood rage do the biddings of the great devourer.
