I have been working on my new space marine chapter. They are a vanilla army, but I am considering a good backstory for them. I was curious what people's thoughts were on what I came up with so far.

They are called the Hell hounds and can date their lineage back to the original XII legion (war hounds) this is prior to the hours heresy. While on a crusade a small flotilla of war hounds received word on the fall of the war hounds primarch and his subsequent fall into chaos. Disagreeing with the world eaters and all they stand for the changed their colors from white and blue to copper and red. Copper being main color and red detail. White inset on shoulder pads in rememberance of the greatness they once had.

They also stopped using hand to hand in a majority of their fighting relying more on shooting and long range almost hunter like techniques. This is to try to keep them as far from what their fallen brothers were and still are as chaos world eaters. After years of rebuilding their force from a small flotilla to a chapter they strive to outdoor chaos and seek vengance for what their b4rothers did during the heresy.

Just a small point, they were still the World Eaters prior to the Heresy. They changed when Angron got the command.

Some people are going to have an issue with you using a heretical legion's geneseed though.

I do like the whole 'averse to what they used to do because of their brothers' fall', but they should still retain a small kernel of violent rage, which they are keeping contained by rigidly adhering to the Codex Astartes or something along those lines. I think that'd be more interesting than just 'they prefer shooting because they used to do XX'.

But they were the warhounds at one time in their great history, besides that I agree I like the respecting the codex to keep them under control. And doesn't the dark angels have a fallen sect does the tainted gene seed really make them instantly bad.i k.now that is kind of a stupid question just curious a bit my fluff fu is rusty

Well, the High Lords either don't use Traitor Geneseed (because traitors), or don't have it.

Pretty much this. And the DA thing, well, they were always a bit special, but if you never used geneseed of any primarch who had any sons turn traitor, then there would also be no new ultramarines, no new DA, no new SW, and those are just the ones that I can think of off the top of my head. Its that those legions didn't just have a chunk turn traitor, its that they, apart from a very small and quickly culled minority, turned completely traitor which kills the use of their geneseed. And also that their primarchs turned traitor (where the genes come from)

Got it so so aggy goes all devil worshipper and blammo everyone he is related to is bad, terra sucks im going chaos jk. Then what's the story behind the renegade chapters. What's their story what would declare them renegade and not chaos.

ANother odd question At what point was aggys geneseed tainted didn't the emperor create the primarch and wasn't he tainted when he was stolen by chaos, then go all rogue when he was returned. Couldn't the good geneseed come prior to his corruption and the apothecaries continually reuse the good stuff.

Renegades are just declared if they do something naughty, like kill of an entire planet because of a small chance of them being tainted by Chaos.

His geneseed doesn't have to be corrupted, it's just that World Eaters are traitors, and the High Lords will most likely never use their geneseed. What could be is that your chapter is made up of Loyalist World Eaters. Say they were officialy put into the Ultramarines Legion, and then when everything got split into Chapters, they formed your chapter. It would be a reason why they still use the World Eater geneseed to this day.

Not all Astartes from the Traitor Legions were traitors (like Garro from the Death Guard, who became one of the founders of the Inquisition).
They were all placed either in other functions, like the Inquisition, or in other Legions. Nothing prevents you from them passing the knowledge about their origins through to their new recruits, who then begin to bear a hatred for the World Eaters too, because Space Marine logics.


Anyways, I think a cool way of going in depth on their history would be making some background for the original 'founders' of your chapter, i.e. the first Chapter Master and his fellows, and then make a jump to the chapter these days.
