So I watched this video:



and thought I'd give it a try. He sais he uses Humbrol clear red, so I bought:

He sais he thins it down with alcohol... here's where the problems start. I tried Alcohol 96%, Oderless white spirit and water but non work. It sais I need to thin it with cellulose thinner, but according to the internet, this will eat my paint and model.

Did I buy the wrong one? Which one did he use you think?

Have you tried it without thinning? I've used the Green and Amber on canopies and they work pretty well without any prior thinning. I would think for something as small as a gem you really wouldn't need to worry about brush strokes

The problem without thinning (I tried this) is that the colour is really dark. And with the technique he uses, you want to be able to see whats under the red coat. Without thinning it, I only saw shiny red.

But I did some more research, and Im starting to think he was using Humbrol Acrylic, not humbrol Clear colour.
Since this is hard to get in the Netherlands, Ill try Tamiya X27- Acrylic

I've not tried Humbrol Clear colours , however I use Tamiya Clear colours , work very well thinned and great for gems , vision ports , power weapons etc etc. Best of all can be thinned and washed up with alcohol or plain water.

Yep, Tamiya colours FTW. They're the only ones I use
