What do people think about the new competition points totals BF has brought in for 2014? Early war has gone from 1500 to 1550. Mid war has gone from 1625 to 1485 (?) and late war from 1750 to 1650.

Seems odd to me. Wonder what the rationale is?

My understanding is they do it to make people mix up their army's every year.

I've never played an official BF Tournament, and I'm unlikely to since they introduced their silly BF models percentage rule.

Interesting that early war has gone up while the others have gone down.

Well, I understand that - its the points totals they've chosen that I find curious.

Yeah, that is odd.
Not all tournaments use the BF models percentage.

Im not even sure what that 50 points increase would gain you. Maybe the odd add on to your HQ. It's not like its even a points addition that would require you to purchase anything additional typically.

The other ones require a bit more thought. The mid war reduction in particular is pretty severe.

All those add ons for your list that you couldn't afford. It's much easier to change a list to include more points than less points due to the 'requirement' for an even number of platoons.

I'm actually happy about the Mid War reduction. The standard Mid War points value, when MW was the period that BF was focusing on primarily was 1500, and a bit part of the challenge was that you knew from the get go you weren't going to be able to bring everything you wanted. At 1485, most armies aren't going to be able to cover all their bases, so deciding what to go without (recon, artillery, air support, armor, or whatever) should make things interesting. I like having to make some hard choices when building an army. If you have enough points to where you can bring all the fancy toys, it starts to get a bit predictable.

Personally I like the new points values and would be happy if they changed it every year with quite a change between the years. 100pts up or down can have a massive impact on list construction and game balance. Not every tournament needs to be 1750pts with the same 5 missions.

That being said I think the MW value could hurt tank armies as I personally think tanks are slightly over costed in MW. But as it stands there is no EW or MW GT in the UK so it's not a massive problem to me.

I wonder why drop LW so much, for elite German army player even 100 points is a lot! That is a price for a battery of 3 NW41s! A full platoon!
