Greetings Dakka!

First apologies if this is in the wrong sub-forum but I thought this fitted well.

Can anyone from the US side of the world fill me on on some standard tournament scoring systems used out there? The reason I ask is because we had a bit of an anomaly at a tournament at the weekend. The system that we were using at the tournament awarded 3 Tournament points for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss. Players also scored tournament points equal to the number of Victory Points they had accumulated in-game. This led to a situation where a player who had won all three of his games was finished as runner up to a player who only won 2 games, but had amassed a higher score. To give more context on available scoring, the missions played were The Emperor's Will, The Relic, and Big Guns.

In the UK i've been to tournaments with a variety of scoring methods. Many of the GT tournaments in the country use a 20-0 system, with points being awarded for difference in primary/secondary objectives. Throne of skulls (GW run tournament) runs a 3 for a win, 1 for a loss system (with a favourite opponent vote awarding up to an additional 5 points). There are many other types as well which i'm sure i'm not covering here.

I'm keen to learn about more scoring systems - i'm curious to see what's played in other parts of the world.

Locally for me, tournament placement has always been decided first by win/loss/draw record, then battle points from completing objectives. If they're still tied we split the winnings.

There are as many tournament scoring systems as there are tournaments.

Generally they kind of fall into two styles of systems.

Single Elimination, often called w/l

Or margin of victory, often called battle points

The tournament you went to seemed like a blend of w/l and battle points. But a very VERY common negative to battle point tournaments is that the player with the best record is not the player with the most tournament points.

If you're interested in how the points for playing games blends in with points for appearance and sportsmanship and how awards are given out, I would suggest reading through some of the tournament advertisements on the forums here. Each on will be very different, but they should have most of that information posted.
