Why does he keep carting around that standard? What is it a standard of, and what is so special about it?

Its a company standard (not sure if its his companies though) and its more of a symbol of the ultramarines defiance in the face of the word bearers assault on calth and ultramar its self.

Thanks for the reply usedboltershell. Yeah it confused me with who's banner it was, and I was thinking it is his companies or a legion banner presented as a battle honour from a previous campaign.

Also, the banner can have more than simple sentimental value.
Banners sometimes have special technology in their construction. Like the psychic weaves in GK Brotherhood banners.
