Hi, I'm looking to help my 8 year old build a 1500 SM list. We play for fun and to learn tactics/math/crafting, not for fluff or for tournaments, so I do not want to spam units. I wonder if anyone can help forge us a list that meets those requirements?

He has already built and painted 2 10-man tactical squads (interchangeable weaponry), a 5-man sniper squad, and 3 bikers; these need to be included.

So, any ideas? We have no preference of Chapter Tactics.

I'm not sure about your budget, but here's a fairly simple list:

HQ:

Captain

Troops:

Tac squad

Tac squad

Fast Attack:

Assault squad

Heavy Support:

Devastator squad

Knowing kids a tank or 2 will capture the imagination and give exposure to different crafting/game concepts like frontal, side armour and hull points. A predator is a good all round tank, and you cant get bigger and badder than a land raider. Whirlwind is also a really nice looking unit once made up and painted.
