Welcome to the area!
I would recommend checking out http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/
Not sure if they are looking for new players, but they are a good lot.
Next Dimension Games is a bit of a hike for you but I love em- http://www.nextdimensiongames.com/. They are doing some events for mini gaming on Saturday and focus mainly on that stuff. I am kind of being a shill because we will be doing demos for Wreck Age there starting at 2PM haha.
Chuck and the guys at the Oak Park Gaming Goat have some tables and are starting to get more interest in mini games it seems- https://www.facebook.com/tggoakpark
and not close to you at all but https://www.facebook.com/DraxtarGames (loads of tables and some great events) and http://www.games-plus.com/ (pretty much anything you could ask for miniature wise) are worth the hike at some point.

Are game stores like the only places where people play? I thought for sure most people would have tables of their own. I'm in Oak Lawn, myself.

Game store events are good place to meet people so that you can gain their trust so that they might let you into their basements ha ha.

Hi, I know you are not necessarily right around the corner, but we are a dedicated wargames store in the city, Next Dimension Games, as Matt has mentioned.
We run 40k just about daily at the moment and just finished up our second Apocalypse game this past weekend.
We have 3 dedicated terrain tables up at all times, and we are always building new stuff for people to play with.
We are relatively new, this is our 4th month, but I had a previous shop, and I'm not new to the wargames community.
If you don't mind heading in to the city, be sure to check us out some time. Wednesday seems to be our big 40K day, but again, we seem to play 40k nearly every day here. It's pretty easy to find a game. We're putting up our October schedule on Saturday after the White Dwarf is released and we can talk about things. I know we will be running another Apocalypse soon, and it's looking like the guys want to bump up to at least 4,000 points next time.

Yea I've been to your shop once before. I like it the tables are sweet. But yea like you said it's not close so I don't want to go hoping to find a game. What hours are usually the busiest for 40k?

Sorry I've been out sick for a few weeks, and I'm THE guy who posts on the boards.
Our games usually start later at night, a lot of people have school/work during the day, and
we tend to run the bigger stuff like Apocalypse on weekends.
We have a board dedicated to our player community where people usually arrange games ahead of time,
but we usually have at least a handful of people at the paint bar who are putting stuff together, and bring an
army just in case.

I know this post is pretty old, but I've seen consistent attendance on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. They have their own dedicated forum that's handy for arranging games. When I was in there on Tuesday night there were a game each of WFB and 40K going on, and a guy was in the store waiting for his opponent to show which would have left all 3 tables filled.
Nice thing is, since they have 18'x4' of table space people can always trim down to 4'x4' to squeeze in another game.
Here's the forum link for organizing a game: http://chicagowargamers.boards.net/
