I am going to be building a display board and want it to feature a city gate and the first half block of the city. So I am hoping some if you know of some pre cast city gates and maybe buildings. That are going to be to warmachine scale.

You can find more information here on my p&m blog. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/538076.page

Given that most of the walled cities in Immorean predate the advances in Mechanika you could probably just get away with generic Fantasy walls with some pipes and steampunky things slapped on them.

I am having some difficulty finding precast stuff though.

If worst comes to worst and you can't actually find anything, a friend of mine made some castle walls out of sugar cubes. Just glue them together and spray some primer over them.

Not necessarily the best plan, but it's cheep and simple to make.

Just the other day I saw a "build your own castle" kit at a craft store.

It was filled with a bunch of tan colored Styrofoam blocks that you could cut and crush to what ever shape you wanted. And when stacked together looked like sandstone.

You could also easily spray them to be another color if you wanted. But they had the perfect stone texture while also being easy to put together and lightweight.

GW still do the WHFB fortress. A bit pricey though.

How long since your friend did that? I can imagine that being, as you said, cheap and simple, and great if you want to build something specific. But won't the cubes crumble eventually? And what about ants?

You could paint the cubes with latex paint before gluing them together. That would keep them together and keep the ants away.

Price isn't something I am super worried about. It is more about finding the right look for the job. I went to my FLGS #2 today and they have replaced all their terrain selection with 40k merch.

The Warhammer fortress is $99 and comes with a gate section, 3 walls, and 4 towers. Plus you can buy the pieces individually at $25 each.

It should be about the right size, and be easy enough to add Steampunk bits to it.

You could also go with Hyrst molds. They use plaster but are the right scale. It will be heavy when its finished though.

I think I may need the hirst arts blocks anyways so I can build up the bases for my models. Which one do I need though? Do you recall which mold set that guy used for his khador?

And I may just grab a wall and a central gate component to make this work.

I'm on my phone or I would look it up for you. Google Major Tusk terrain tutorial. He has an article about the Hirst molds and which do what, with lots of pictures.

My google fu is really not working lately as I can't even get close to that. I found Tusk from Dota2 but he is a trash hero, and something about the M1 Abrams.

I like that. Its basically a modular way of making stone buildings.

Seems that, although the moulds make a specific building, you could combine pieces from different moulds to make unique buildings.

I wonder how much all that Dental Plaster came to?

Dental plaster is pretty cheep, especially when compared to resin.

Ok sweet I will check that out, but if I don't use all my dental plaster I can just cast some new teeth for myself.

You're right, its not used for teeth themselves. Its used to make mock-ups of the mouth, which are then used as a base upon which to build custom crowns, inlays, dentures, bridges, etc. since its a lot easier to do that work on a stone replica than in a patients mouth. A lot of the fiddly work is actually done in wax on the stone cast, and then recast in porcelain, plastic, or what have you to make the final product.

I've had good experiences with using Hirst Arts molds. Just make sure you use dental stone and not plaster of paris, since dental stone is a lot tougher and won't be ruined by humidity.
