They both have their good points and bad points (plus a Manticore's d3 blasts of str 10 ap 4 at that point level would certainly drive fear into the heart of anyone but Marbo), but am I courting disaster by putting all my eggs in one basket?

Somehow get some decent special weapons (Plasma of melta) on them vet squads and your doing alright. I'd put them in chimeras, save points, and will be more fun (people will hate playing 2 fliers at 500 points)
