I'd love to know if you find an answer, as it is my home-town and I still visit family from time to time.

Growing up there, what I can say is that it is a really poor town, so WH40K or any kind of miniature gaming at all is an unaffordable luxury to the overwhelming majority. I had never heard of anything like war gaming until I had moved elsewhere. That being said, there are isolated pockets of hobby groups here and there that always surprise me when I find out about them though, so there will likely be some group for 40K as well.

Get ready for the weather. Despite it being pretty far south and in a desert, the lack of moisture creates strong variability in temperature. In Winter it gets super cold (below freezing) and windy, but no snow. In the Summer it gets crazy hot (once it was 116F and melted the tar in the main road), and the wind becomes stagnant. Basically it's like living on the surface of the moon.
