So I plan on making a Necron 1850 list (I've already started actually) and I need some help since I don't actually know what to do

I've never played necron before and I've never played against them. Most of the people at my GW seem to play either marines, chaos or Tau. Tau is very popular. Keeping this in mind I want to make a list that can stand up against Tau but not specifically tailored to Tau. I want a good, over all list. Here is what I have so far in terms of a 1000pt list (not in unit composition, just how many models of each type)

2 night scythes
10 warriors
1 destroyer lord with MSS
12 wraiths
1 Annihilation Barge

How should my 1850 list go? A friend of mine is giving me a free Monolith and 28 more warriors which will make 40 warriors in my possession.

ALSO are C'tahn Shards any good? I love the way they look and if they are a viable option I'd love to have one in my list just for how they look

Gauss Cannon (Gauss Weapon), Twin-Linked Tesla Destructor (Arc, Tesla Weapon)

* Necron Monolith (200pts)
Eternity Gate (Dimensional Corridor, *, Portal of Exile), 4x Gauss Flux Arc (*), Particle Whip

If you can come up with an overlord and 2 reg lords this should work just fine, and if you built the Annihilation Barge you should have a left over overlord from the command barge alternate build.

attach the overlord to the 10 man squad and the 2 regs to the 15 man squads bring them in turn 2 on the night scyths and deep strike the monolith in as well where ever it'll cause the most damage transport that 10 man squad out the front and bam your suddenly in a position to overun them while using your AB to harrass and cause damage.

Why only 3 with whip coils and not all 6? Do the coils reduce damage?

No they make any enemy models in base contact attack at Initative 1. So you get to attack first, and you could do all 12 if you wanted but they're 10 points a piece and 3 per squad should work just make sure they're in front.

I like the above list with one exception. In my experience the monolith doesn't last long vs Tau's strength 10 weapons. I would replace that with a Doom Scythe, or maybe Nightscythe with some deathmarks and a cryptek.

Regarding the wraiths and their whip coils, I think it all depends on how much you fear the attacks of your enemy. Take 6 per squad if you plan on a hard fight, but I would only take 3 per squad of 6 against tau.

This is actually a decent start. I'd expand the list as follows:

DLord w/ mss, weave
10 Warriors w/ Night Scythe
2x 10 Immortals w/ Night Scythe
2x 6 Wraiths
3 Annihilation Barges

Add more troops, Wraiths, another DLord. Don't bother with the rest and leave the whip coils at home as the weapons that can hurt Wraiths most hit with initiative 1 anyway.

I see in all of these suggestions a very obvious lack of Shards. I assume, then, that they are pretty much useless or over priced points wise?
