I just started getting in playing couple of months ago and started out with the Necron Battleforce set. I've been adding to it as I've done some research online. I've found a lot of good suggestions in the DakkaDakka forums on Necron strategies and troop choices. You all have been a great help in pointing me what seems to be a good starting direction. I've had a lot of fun so far playing the few games I have.
Here's my current army with plans to add A unit of Deathmarks and a Night Scythe down the road.
HQ
Necron Overlod, CCB, Mindshackle Scarabs, Phase Shifter, Resurrection Orb, Tachyon Arrow, Tesseract Labyrinth
Royal Court
Harbinger of Despair: Nightmare Shroud, Veil of Darkness
Harbinger of Destruction X 2
Harbinger of Eternity: Chronometron
Harbinger of the Storm
Troops
Necron Immortals X 5: Gauss
Necron Warriors X 10: Ghost Ark
Necron Warriors X 10
Fast Attack
Canoptek Scarabs X 5
Canoptek Wraiths X 6
1 Wraith with Particle Caster
5 X Wraiths with Whip Coils
I've yet to play test the current config as I've only just finished gluing and priming all the latest models (Wraths and Royal Court). I haven't had a lot of games against many opponents except my friend who plays CSM, and I found my biggest failing was lack of range and lack of close combat.
I did kit out my Necron Overlord with a Warscyth and CCB based on posts from others in the forums and that helped immensely with the mindshackle scarabs, but he could only deal with 1 problem at a time and can't be every where at once. After reading everyone's thoughts on Wraiths a full unit of Wraiths with whip coils seemed to be the answer. I thought I'd put the wraith with Particle Caster as the lead model to take fire until in close combat range, and if he survived to get there I'd have 1 shot prior to charge.
I also thought the Royal Court of Harbingers would be good to use the Harbinger of Despair to DS around the table to deal with Armour, and ranged heavy weapons that my troops can't get to and to generally screw with my opponents deployment strategies. I wanted to Stormtek for the haywire if I needed to close on some armour that my scarabs couldn't chase down fast enough, but also thought the extra assault hits would do fine in a pinch on any old unit too, while having the extra punch of the Harbingers of Destruction, and the Chronometron for any critical rerolls.
I'm still painting up the models and want to play a few matches before I decide what I should get next to add to the force but I was leaning towards Deathmarks and a Nightscythe delivery system I could pair them with despairtek Harbinger (which seems to be the recommended play with those guys).
