He's done plenty great work after the VU. Transformer, Coney Island Baby, The Blue Mask, New York, and Magic and Loss, among others, were all fantastic albums.

Songs for Drella is easily the finest work of his entire musical career, and that came out several decades after the VU broke up.

In addition, his concert albums throughout his entire career, especially Animal Serenade, happened to be incredibly good.
