I set out to make a list with a very clear division- Templars are stabby, Raptors are shooty. I doubt it's tournie worthy, but it looks like it could be fun and competitive on a friendly level-

Templars-
Helbrecht
Crusader Squad- 10 Initiate, 9 Neophyte, Sword Brother w/ Maul, hidden Ax, melta

2 Crusader Squads- 7 Initiate, 5 Neophyte, Sword Brother w/ Maul, hidden Ax, melta

Crusader Squad- 6 Initiate, 6 Neophyte, Sword Brother w/ Maul, hidden Ax, melta

All models armed for CC, though some Neophytes have Shotguns

Raptors-

Librarian

Sternguard- 10 Veterans, 4 Combi Weapons

Devastators- 10 Marines, 4 Missile Launchers, Flakk

Landspeeder Squadron- 2 Speeders, Multi Melta + Heavy Flamer

2 Scout Squads- 5 Scouts, Cloaks, 4 Snipers, 1 Heavy Bolter w/ Hellfire, Landspeeder Storm

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Originally, the Raptors were merely Raven Guard, but with the Chapter Tactics FW released the other day (which thankfully dont actually require FW books to use) Raptors seemed so much more appropriate for a number of reasons. A fun bonus was that the 5 extra marines I took for the Devastators suddenly had a chance to Rend at 24", helping significantly for anything that wanders too close (potentially even enemy armor), as opposed to just being spare wounds.

Scouts get dropped off and dig in ASAP, while the two Storms most likely run defense by Blind Blasting the more dangerous shooty squads, hopefully buying a turn or two of relative safety for the Black Tide to march up the field. The Sternguard and Devastators most likely Combat Squad, either Outflanking or Scouting as the situation demands.

I feel dirty running my Templars with a Librarian ally, but they're the best bargain for an HQ.

So then, thoughts?

Where is this information on FW chapter tactics you speak of for the Raptors?

Ah I see it now in the pdfs section on FW. Very interesting indeed.

I was thinking of doing a Raptors contingent for my IG.

You should do that, it is very much in the Raptors fluff. Even paint them in similar colors so the marines blend in with the IG guys.

Actually my Broken Arrows will be standing in as the Raptors. Their fluff is very similar, their style of warfare even more so.

Now, how about the list?

By the way, for those that don't feel like looking it up, Raptors have the Strike from the Shadows CT that Raven Guard have, but rather than Winged Deliverance, they get a CT called Legendary Marksman which allows Bolters, combi-weapons being fired as Bolters, and Bolt Pistols to fire as Heavy 1 weapons with Rending.

The HQ unit for the Raptors has IMO a really nice ability. D6+3 wounds (no AP) to any unit before scout moves? "Hey, buddy, that pathfinder unit right there? Yea, screw those guys, D6+3 wounds brah."

I was thinking-
Raptor Ally Detachment

Chapter Master (FW Hero Lias Issodon)

Troops-
1 unit 10x Tac Marines
1unit 5x Scouts w/ cloaks (Bolters)

Fast Attack-
Assault Marines? (Not sure)

Elite-
Sternguard? Vanguard? Not sure

Heavy Support-
Thunderfire cannon or Storm Raven

What do you guys think? Maybe a unit of scouting vanguards? Assault Marines? IDK

For Raptor tactics, Sternguard make a lot more sense than Vanguard. A lot more. If you're going to use Vanguard, best to stick with Raven Guard tactics.

I don't think you can take Lias as an allied detachment. He's got an auto-Warlord rule. It would not allow Helbrecht to come along either, as there can only be one Chapter Master in any detachment according to his rules.

He's an awesome character, but he can't really be used in this particular scenario.

I thought auto-warlord would just make him warlord even though he isnt the primary detachment. Anyone got a FAQ or ruling from this? I know the BRB says that your Warlord must be chosen from primary, but I'm not sure if this accounts for rule that just states "such and such is always the warlord." It doesn't really say much else than that.

For example, if you try taking the super HQ CM from Dark Angels, it specifically says Dark Angels must be your primary. None of that here?

I would say that since the BRB says the warlord must come from the primary detachment, that such is the case, period. Just because the character is auto-warlord doesn't mean he's an exception: he's still the warlord, and the warlord must be from the primary.

Seriously though, no thoughts on the actual list?
