I have a game coming up Tuesday vs. a Tau list from the new 'Dex. I really only have the resources to run a footslogging Templar list (I'm proxing some Tornadoes for the game.) We're going to generate the scenario/strategy level on the day of. Anyway, here's what I've got.

HQ

Chaplain, 3x Cenobyte Servitors, Holy Orb

Chaplain, 3x Cenobyte Servitors, Holy Orb, Meltabomb

Emperor's Champion, Uphold the Honor of the Emperor (6+Invulnerable Save) Vow

Troops

Crusade Squad 1

10xInitiates, 6xNeophytes, Powerfist, Meltagun, BP +CCWx14

Crusade Squad 2

Same

Crusade Squad 3

Same

Fast Attack

Tornado Landspeeder

Tornado Landspeeder

Tornado Landspeeder

Elite

Dreadnought, Drop Pod, Heavy Flamer, Assault Cannon, Smoke, Armor

I'm obviously concerned about getting the pants shot off of my troops before they can cross the board. The three hqs will be leading individual crusade squads, with the chaplains leading the charge (since they get to direct RZ.) I don't imagine crossing the board will take very long, it's just a question of what shape my units will be in once they get there. The Dread should be a nasty surprise, as his flamer will cook some firewarriors/Kroot up to a nice broil. I can't tell you what my opponent's going to field beyond A) Lots of Broadsides with the 2+ armor save and shield drones for protection B) Not a ton of Hammerheads (probably good, as submunitions make mince-meat of neophytes) and C) A unit of Kroot he uses for counterassault.

Any suggestions? I don't have any frag grenades on my troop choices, so I'm sort of worried about that, as I know most of his units will be in deep cover. On the other hand, we're talking about Tau in close combat here, so maybe it's not a big deal.

I might take a look at Grimaldus. With his 6" Rightous Zeal you could save some points by only having to take him instead of 2 chaplains. This could Help you max out your Crusader squads. Everything else looks great.

Do not worry to much about crossing the board. If he is not going to be Hammerhead heavy you should be fine. The Broadsides will only kill a couple at most, and that will get you headed in the right direction, forward.

Thanks for the response. I've noticed it's kind of tough to get people to comment on BT on this board, for some reason (they're probably not min/maxy enough .)

I have the crusade squads at this size so that, when you add the chappy and the cenobytes, you still keep the 3+ save as the majority, and have an even number of people. But I see your point with adding Grimauldus, as I would then only have to do that with his particular squad. Hmm. Definitely something to consider.

Tell me about it. Please let me know how it works. I have been playing Drop Templars for the past few weeks and am going to try Horde Templars next. Your Battle report would be helpful.

I am at work and do not have the list in front of me, but my Horde list went something like this:

Grimaldus

Emp. Champ. 6+ Save Vow

10 Crusaders Melta/PF
10 Initiates

10 Crusaders Melta/PF
10 Initiates

10 Crusaders Melta/PF
10 Initiates

3 Pred AC/HB

Not much use against Armor, buy my group rarely uses it.

I like the list. Its pretty troop heavy, which is a good thing, since Templars are godly in H2H, only made more true by your ccw choices. I'd consider some termies while your at it, although that might not be the best advice when fighting Tau. A five-man squad with a pair of Assault Cannons will literally cut down an entire Fire Warrior squad. Give a sqaud (or a chappie) a homing beacon, and it'll be easy as stop, drop, shoot, and watch them die.

Their fists may be slow (duh), but you teleport them into assault range of an enemy tank, or give them tank hunters, and those Assault Cannons will even glance frontal Hammerhead armor.

Of course, then there's the points cost. Many refuse to field a five-man team at the insane price of 240 points, with the cannons. You add Tank Hunters, and they're suddenly 255. Ouch.

IMHO, Termies are much better off in urban-style fighting environments. Their short-range Cannons will just destroy light infantry, and still inflict substantial injuries/losses on larger, heavier-duty units.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person, who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
