Yes, yes, and yes.

We quit 'nids for some time when 6th edition hit, partly because our beloved genestealers got nerfed.

But psychic powers make a great difference, and the flyrant really, usually with twin linked devourers is a great unit. Kills most opposition, if he sneaks up the flanks and shoots from behind. You have to play him a bit carefully, don't assault from the front and, if you're a pod-heavy army like us, hug cover for turn one.

OUr army is far more mobile than it used to be, and altho our flyrant is magnetised, we haven't used him in any other mode for a full year. Quite a few people seem to use two, which is a bit boring in my view, but they do it because they're very effective units.

how did they nerf the genes?

Wings are the best things ever, and with mastery lvl 2 hive tyrants with biomancy and the guns for 12 twin linked shots make them beastly.

Wings are most definitively worth the points. To put it in perspective. To get a demon prince (which is regarded as another one of the super tough FMCs to handle) on par with the Flyrant you're typically paying somewhere to the tune of 300+ points. And even then you're only getting a T5 MC. A Flyrant is stock T6.

Flyrants with Devourers can put out ~9 S6 hits against most units every turn. I usually have him averaging 10 or 11. Twin linking is so BA.

On top of all of this, you can shove Shadows in the Warp down your opponents throat quickly if you choose to, and if you're T9 (because of Iron Arm) you typically don't have to worry about being grounded.

Like Hivefleet Oblivion said, you typically want to play them more conservatively, but with Turn 1, a +3 Iron arm and Endurance from a nearby psyker, I ALWAYS send him down my opponent's throat. Forcing your opponent to react to your moves is typically want wins games for Tyranid players.

A little off topic, but here's basically how Genestealers got nerfed:
  • No assault from reserves (means can't assault from outflanking)

  • Overwatch from most basic troops units will result in an auto kill 1 or 2 models when you charge them

  • Most cover saves decreased to a 5+

  • The proliferation of "ignores cover" weapons

  • Overpriced compared to other updated 6th Ed. Troop units

  • Did I miss any?

Steeler units can still work you just can't chuck um at every thing any more they are still probably point 4point the best combat unit in the game. A steeler list won't work any more . As said before over watch and not being able to assault as they come on mean they are very soft. Still a small unit with a kited out BL can work well if you have enough big MC to take the focus of them. OH and the only way to take a tyrant is flying with devours if you want to do well with them and a pair is advisable because 1 will go down quick if not iron armed. Good luck Nids rule having a little break from them my self but I miss playing them already . Don't let any one tell you they are under powered and out dated I've won comps against the new codex's.

All depends on what sort of points you have to play with . Regen is a waste implant attacks ok but if you go with devours he's more of a daka tyrant and I'd keep him flying around not pick fights with tough targets take old ad and hive commander . That will be the best way to take him if you play that style if you do decide to go for a combat tyrant ( I don't advice this) give him bs lw and toxin sacs ( great for Wkinghts ) . Always take the powers from biomancy and hope for iron arm and endurance.

The only time a Hive Tyrant shouldn't take wings is when he is the SwarmLord.

As to GeneStealers, GeneStealers aren't as good, but the Broodlord is now awesome. Consider them merely ablative wounds for that terror. And he has a good chance of rolling up Iron Arm, or Endurance, and can turn into a true monster. Not quite the nobrainer of the Tervigon, but they are far from bad.
