So I wanted to try out some new stuff for my Salamanders Army (adding bikes w/grav, foot slogging Centurians, and flamer happy stuff). My opponent doesn't like flyers, so we're doing some no flyer lists to test things out. Will be fighting Khorne list combo of CSM and Daemons with no screamers, a Necron foot list with one wraith squad, or Nids with lot's of little gribblies.
HQ Chapter Master w/Artificer, Eternal Shield, Thunderhammer: Tank for the Centurians in center field
HQ Librarian w/Jump Pack, lvl 2: Join assault squad and provide a third flamer template using the prime power from pyrotechnics - other power TBD based on situation
Troops Scout Squad w/Sniper rifles and camo cloaks, 1xHeavy Bolter and HF Rounds: Monster hunter in backfield
Troops Scout Squad w/Sniper rifles: Expendable scoring unit that can scout in front or arrive on a flank from reserve
Troops Tacticals w/Flamer, MM, Drop Pod: Turn 1 assault on weak flank
Troops Tacticals w/Flamer, MM, Rhino: Mobile scoring - combat squad to hold/move on two objectives
Fast Assault Squad w/2xFlamer: Support the assault on the weak flank
Fast Bike Squad w/2xGR, 5 bikers, Atk Bike w/MM: Mobile firepower supporting the weak flank assault or diverting to react to enemy movement or reserves
Heavy Centurian Devastators x3 w/GC: Hold the center field and keep enemy from deploying near.
Heavy Thunderfire Cannon: Provide back field long range anti-infantry fire as well as bolstering terrain on my side
So the idea is to aggressively assault one flank with three squads (drop pod tacticals, assault squad and bikes) while using the CM and Centurians to create an exclusionary zone in the center in support of the open flank of the assault. The two scout squads provide back field scoring and target any monstrous creatures with one having potential expendable distraction role. That leaves another tac squad as a mobile reserve to support the center or the flank attack. Basically refusing the other flank.
We usually play an objective heavy game with lot's of terrain, but in the case of relic, the mobile stuff goes to isolate the relic supported by the Centurians and we play a denial game preventing enemy from grabbing relic.
Thoughts? I know I could save points (about 35) on the CM by taking Vulkan (and then TL meltas), but I like the eternal warrior as when the monstrous creatures come out Vulkan tends to be too vulnerable and is liable to be taken out by a STR 8/9 shot, so I want to try the CM in his place as a better tank.
