Subject: Welcome to the 2014 Call To Arms Season !

01 ) Introduction
As we enter into this third season, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and tell you about the origins of the Call To Arms league.
I began playing table-top games shortly after I moved from Egg Harbor Township to Marlton. It started with Zombies when I became a "Minion" for Twilight Creations, and then one of the "Men In Black" for Steve Jackson Games - both of those are programs similar to being a "Press Ganger" for Privateer Press.
Miniatures came next, when I was first introduced to Heroclix by Bob at Stormwatch Comics, then Pirates Of The Spanish Main by Ed & Dina at All Things Fun, and lastly Mech Warrior by friends at Ron's Comic World.
My introduction to Warhammer 40K came shortly after with the release of Fourth Edition. As part of a family tradition, I play games on Christmas Eve with my brother - Ed M.
He has been involved with Games Workshop for several years, and made numerous attempts to bring me into the loop. But something about their games however just never really got my attention - then that all changed with a single demo on that particular Christmas Eve ... I was easily hooked on playing ( but not looking forward to having to paint minis )
We formed our first gaming group in the months ahead, consisting of six players - two of them are also on this season's roster = John L and Kevin V. And things just escalated from there for me - adding different armies to my collection, spending more time at tables, traveling to other venues, and meeting other players ... and yeah, painting models along the way.
But it wasn't only 40K that my gaming and hobbying time was spent on. In the years that followed I have added other minis to my collection - to name just a few ... Warmachine & Hordes, Malifaux, Aeronautica Imperialis, and X-Wing. Plus, I've had the opportunity to share the table with countless gamers at numerous venues - again to name just a few ... Fat Cat Comics, Phoenix Games, Good Versus Evil, and The Only Game In Town.
Something just seemed "missing" though during most of that time - and I realized it was the lack of "organized play" after our original gaming group started to separate. Thankfully, that void was filled when I started playing at Ye Olde Hobbies & Games.
I believe the league's earliest roots go back to a single post on the Ye Olde forums - Bruce H suggested a series of tournaments, and for reasons unkown at this time, I just grabbed the reigns and ran with it. These were the most unorganized tournaments that I have ever participated in - and the most fun. Its chaotic structure bordered on hilarious = we had scrap paper for score sheets and sticky notes for keeping track of prize support. This easily established in me the desire to host events, but more importantly I was able to connect with like-minded hobbyists ... and our time together wasn't only spent at gaming tables, it was also spent at tables where we could order food & drinks.
The tournaments that I hosted at Ye Olde were simply called Call To Arms - a name that I continue to use today for the league, as a reminder to how all of this began. After Ye Olde Hobbies & Games closed its doors permanently, we moved our social gaming concept over to Games Workshop Voorhees - and in time expanded on it.
It was simply an idea that I had = friends getting together once a month for some gaming during the day then food & drinks afterwards. This idea was shared with those from the Ye Olde crowd, and a handful of others I met at GWV - this was the start of the "invitation list" to join what would eventually become a league in 2012 and continue in 2013 with Outside The Box Games, All Things Fun, and Top Deck Games being added as hosting venues.
This season we would like to thank Ed & Dina at All Things Fun and Nick at Top Deck Games, for their continued support of our league and providing us with a location to play.
Since its birth at Ye Olde, the Call To Arms has grown to become something much more organized. It has nearly four times the number of players now, compared to the number of players we first started with - each league member a like-minded hobbyist that brings something unique to the table. If you are here now reading this then it means you have demonstrated something about yourself that an invation has been sent to you - either from me or a friend of yours that is already in this league.
Take a moment to look at the roster. It does not include those that have a reputation of only playing to win. Likewise it does not include those that only play to have fun. It does however include a list of those that I believe are a good example of the type of player that has found the happy-medium between both types above.
Please remember this when you are playing against another league member. This is a game, and games are played for enjoyment ... bring hard lists, bring soft lists - it's all up to you. But more importantly, bring a friendly attitude. And win or lose - the game should end with a handshake, a smile, and an exchange of "good game"
Joe M - League Operator
Good Luck to all, and looking forward to seeing everyone at the tables in 2014 !!!

02 ) Army Building
"...Moving forward as our "counts towards" clock starts ticking as of 12:01 AM on December 15th 2013 = we are going to open the 2014 season with a "full allowance" that includes Escalation, Stronghold Assault, Advent Dataslates, etc - in short, if Games Workshop and / or Forge World make it playable for Sixth Edition standard, then we will incorporate it into our 2014 season..."
"...At this time it will just be easier to let things be as Games Workshop and Forge World continue to release material, rather than piecemeal the rules & units in a subjective manner to enforce bans and restrictions..."
"...I'm leaving this to the league members to build lists as they wish, but also keep in mind this is still a game and the time spent at the table should still be enjoyable..."
The point level for games played in the 2014 season is 2K SFOC aka 1999+1. Each league member must select one codex to represent their Primary Detachment - if a player opts to change their Primary Detachment during the season, then they will forfeit all points they had previously earned and begin again as if they just joined the league.
Note: Players are allowed to change their lists during the season without any penalty ... you do not have to run the same list every game. ...
As an alternative, players may elect to choose from one of the Games Workshop supplement books to be their Primary Detachment. Likewise, they also may pick from one of the 6E updated alternate lists from Forgeworld.
League members that choose Space Marines must select a Chapter as their Primary Detachment, and this includes the option to pick from one of the Forgeworld Chapter Tactics.
Allied Secondary Detachments are allowed as per the normal core rules of 6E, but unlike the Primary Detachment they can vary during the season.
There are no restrictions on any of the Fortifications during league games - this includes the three newest Fortifications made available by GW during their Apocalypse release ... bear in mind you will be using the modified 40K rules during league games, not the Apocalypse rules.
The league is also considered to be Forgeworld Friendly in that models marked "FR" are acceptable following Adepticon's 2013 Guide, found here @ http://www.adepticon.org/13rules/201340KIAApoc.pdf
Note: A model / unit that has "experimental" rules will not be permitted during league games.
Because of the league's allowance of Escalation, and as to not make this a wallet-war between league members, proxies for Super Heavies & Gargantuan Creatures will be permitted up until Sunday May 18th 2014. This is to give players enough time to work on a budget that will allow them to purchase the actual model if they wish to include it in games after May 18th.
Efforts should be made to have the proxied model look reasonable enough to be a "counts as" alternative - don't just place a shoebox on the table and say its a Baneblade ... rather, add some plasticard details and a kit bashed turret ... additional details regarding Proxied SH&G can be found in 06 ) Prize Support and Planned Budget = The Mike W Grapefruit Award.
And on the subject of "counts as" I would like to remind everyone these are still games between between friends, and as such the usual courtesy of allowing temporary models while playtesting and / or waiting for orders should be extended to those that ask during the regular season - under no circumstance however will proxies and temps be permitted during playoff games.
Amendment 01 = 02/26/2014
Codex Eldar and the Iyanden Supplement will be treated as separate source material ( akin to Codex Tau Empire and Farsight Enclave ) which has the following impact on the league.
01. Depending on which you choose to be your Primary detachment, as Battle Brothers Eldar can ally with Iyanden or Iyanden can ally with Eldar. Likewise, Iyanden will be added to the allies matrix in the same location as Eldar.
02. Primary: Eldar - This is simply straight from the book = units are selected "as-is" from the codex, and follows all of the core rules located within.
03. Primary: Iyanden - units are selected as normal from the Eldar codex, but must follow the Iyanden supplement rules where possible ( e.g. Remnants and Spiritseer's Primaris Power ). In addition, the following changes have been included for the league...
- You must include a Spiritseer(s) and / or Prince Yriel as your HQ choice.
- You may select a Wraithseer as a second HQ choice ( the Wraithseer cannot be taken as a second HQ choice in an Eldar Primary Detachment )
Amendment 02 = 02/26/2014
This is being submitted as an introduction to our current league rules - and barring any unseen game-breaking sillyness, will be a permanent addition ... allowable options for "Chaos Space Marines" e.g. Decimator Daemon Engine, Lord of Skulls, Etc will be made available to "Black Legion" as well.
Amendment 03 = 06/16/2014
As of June 16th the league will be using the complete 7E ruleset, with lists being Battle Forged = Unbound lists will not be permitted
Painted armies are not required during the regular season, but players are asked to work towards having a fully painted & based army by the end of the season - the standards for fully painted & based are three minimum colors on the model itself and the base must have a scenic appearance ( flock, 3d prefabs, water, etc ). Note: flightstands and their clear bases are exempt from needing to meet the standards above.
During the playoffs however, a penalty will be enforced on units that are not fully painted & based as per the standards described above - complete details can be found in the Playoffs section.

03 ) Schedule
Our official league days are posted below, which include the normal breakfast gathering before gaming and dinner afterwards for those that can make it. Locations for each will vary during the season so check for updates where we are meeting.
And please keep in mind as we have an open schedule format = there are no scheduled pairings other than playoffs, and games do not have to be played on actual league days / venues listed. It is the responsibility of each league member to schedule their own games against other league members.
It is highly suggested that players post their availability often on the Facebook group page. Likewise, it is highly suggested that players read the Facebook group page to see when players are available.
Players are asked to make every possible effort to not play against the same league member more than once during the regular season.

04 ) Scores For Games Played
Please remember to send your game results to Francis via text or private message,
and feel free to post your battle reports on the group page as well.
The "Primary Score" is based on the mission / deployment being played. It is worth a total of 20 points and will be recorded as 14 vs 06 for a Win ~ Loss or 10 vs 10 for a Draw.
The "Secondary Score" is worth up to 10 points and is based on army destruction - where each player will earn 1 point for every 10% they destroy of their opponent's army = which includes units fully destroyed, those below half their starting number, vehicles damaged for any reason, and single models with less than half of their starting wounds. As such for a 2000 point game ...
01 points = 0001 to 0200
02 points = 0201 to 0400
03 points = 0401 to 0600
04 points = 0601 to 0800
05 points = 0801 to 1000
06 points = 1001 to 1200
07 points = 1201 to 1400
08 points = 1401 to 1600
09 points = 1601 to 1800
10 points = 1801 to 2000
A player's total number of points is based on the Primary Score plus the Secondary Score. The higher of the results between the two players determines the winner, or in some cases results in a draw.
In the event a game ends in a Massacre or a player concedes a game early, then the winner be awarded the full 30 points. The opponent however will still earn points for the Secondary Score only.
A league member's current standing is based on their Points Per Game average ( PPG ) where the player's total number of points are divided by the number of games played.

05 ) Playoffs
In order to be considered eligible for the playoffs, a league member must have played at least nine games - and as a reminder, every possible effort should be made to not play against the same league member more than once during the regular season.
At the regular season's end on September 7th, the top eight players based on their PPG will qualify for the playoffs - these games, and future rounds of the playoffs, do not have to be played on the dates listed above but they must be played before the next round begins. League members are encouraged to play their games at the scheduled venue but this is not mandstory.
Players must field the same Primary Detachment during playoff games as they did during the regular season. If a player switched Primary Detachments during the regular season, all games played still count for being eligible but a player must have a minimum of three games with the Primary Detachment they intend to use during playoff games.
Players will maintain their original end of season PPG throughout the playoffs - where someone ranked seventh for example will continue to be ranked seventh. The initial pairings, and subsequent, are upper plays lower so in the quarter finals:
01 versus 08
02 versus 07
03 versus 06
04 versus 05
Eligible for playoffs: Joe M
Eligible for playoffs: Francis P
Eligible for playoffs: Bruce C
Eligible for playoffs: Cory S
Eligible for playoffs: John S
Eligible for playoffs: Giff
Eligible for playoffs: Jason D
Eligible for playoffs: Jarrod S
Eligible for playoffs: Rob J
Eligible for playoffs: Joe R
Eligible for playoffs: Dan L
Eligible for playoffs: Don A
Regarding units that are not fully painted & based during playoff games - borrowing from the Daemon's Warp Storm table, the league will replace The Warp Is Calm with Bob's Happy Little Colored Cloud that has the following profile:
Fleshbane, Haywire, Ignores Cover, and AP2
After deployment, roll a d6 for each unit that is not fully painted & based. This includes units that are on the table and units that are in reserves. If a 6 is rolled then the unit takes d3 hits from Bob's Happy Little Colored Cloud. If a unit suffers an unsaved wound or loses a hull point, then it cannot take any other voluntary actions on it's next available turn. Note: this would mean units on the table could not move, shoot, etc ... and units held in reserves would not be available to arrive on their first succesful roll.
Units that would be able to arrive during the game by other means such as Portalglyphs are also subject to Bob's Happy Little Colored Cloud. Likewise, replacement effects such as Chaos Spawn are subject to this rule as well - roll for each unpainted unit when it becomes available, and apply any effects when possible.

06 ) Prize Support and Planned Budget
The league has a $20 entry fee per player this season - those funds will be used for prize support, the cost of commerative league dice, and a donation to Extra Life 2014. Until we have an actual known number of league members, the planned budget looks like this based on the per player fee:
$ 05.00 towards Dice
$ 05.00 towards Extra Life 2014
$ 10.00 towards Prize Support
There will be two different types of limited edition dice available to players. The first is our standard - which every league member will receive a pair of. The second is our playoff - which the top eight players will receive a pair of. Each set will feature the same custom logo, but the colors used will be different ... the standard dice color changes every season, but the playoff dice use the same color every season.
Extra Life is a fund raising group that supports the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Their motto is Play Games - Heal Kids ... and this season I would like to a make an opening donation to Team Annabelle on behalf of the Call To Arms. Complete details for this event will be posted as Tom King and I receive more updates throughout the year.
Prize Support will be issued as store credit, and I will be spreading it out evenly between both venues ( ATF & TDG ) as a thank you for their continued support.
$ 30.00 The Good, The Bad, and The WTH?
$ 10.00 First Blood ... awarded to Cory S
$ 10.00 Linebreaker
$ 10.00 Slay The Warlord
$ 10.00 The Mike W Grapefruit Award
$ 30.00 Paint & Play Challenge
After funds have been used to cover the prize support above, all remaining money will be put towards the playoff rounds - this is paid out as store credit to the top eight players, over four brackets.
The Good, The Bad, and The WTH? - This category covers the epic moments ( for better or for worse ) that happen during a game. If you think you have something that fits this role then please share it with the rest of us. The top three recipients based on league votes will each receive $ 10.00 in store credit.
First Blood will be awarded to the winner of the first completed league game.
Linebreaker will be awarded to the player with the highest Primary score average, ranked by number of games played.
Slay The Warlord will be awarded to the player with the highest Secondary score average, ranked by number of games played.
The Mike W Grapefruit Award will be awarded to the player with the league's favorite proxied Super Heavy or Gargantuan - based on vote.
The Paint & Play Challenge for this season will be Archeotech Artefacts, where each league member may submit a single Archeotech Artefact terrain piece of their choice ( Page 106 ) and the top three winners ( determined by league vote ) will each receive $ 10.00 in store credit. Note: to keep the entries consistent, each must be mounted on a 60mm round base.
Entries for both Mike W's Grapefruit Award and the Paint & Play Challenge must be submitted no later than September 7th 2014 ( the league's regular season end ) We will be able to display them during the playoff season, and voting will be on December 28th 2014 at the end of season gathering.
Despite the league having an official opening on Sunday January 26th 2014 any games played ( using league rules ) starting on Sunday December 15th 2013 at 12:01 AM can be counted as games played for the season. This means the clock starts ticking for the First Blood incentive on Sunday December 15th at 12:01 AM ... determination will be solely based on real-time posts on the Facebook group page = please ... do not message me, do not call me, do not text me.
Using a temporary example of 32 league members ( 320.00 ) the playoff payouts would look like this after the incentives were taken care of first.
320.00 as 10.00 per player at 32 players
100.00 towards incentives
220.00 for playoffs with four brackets
Top 8 = 06.25 each 50.00 ( 220.00 - 050.00 = 170.00 )
Top 4 = 12.50 each 50.00 ( 170.00 - 050.00 = 120.00 )
Top 2 = 25.00 each 50.00 ( 120.00 - 050.00 = 070.00 )
Top 1 = 50.00 once ( 070.00 - 050.00 = 020.00 )
$ 20.00 will be awarded to the recipient of the Sean P Award aka Player's Choice = this is when league members vote for their favorite opponent during the regular season.
Earnings trickle down in the brackets, such that the winner of the 2014 season by example would be awarded a total of $ 93.75
Though not part of the entry fee, tee shirts for the league will also be available for purchase separately by league members. The cost for these shirts will be determined at a later date, after we determine the design - colors used - number needed.
Dice and Tee Shirts will be available to all players following the league's regular season end on Sunday September 7th. All other prize support will be awarded to league members at our end of season gathering on Sunday December 28th.

07 ) House Rules and Clarifications
If a question is not already clearly answered via FAQs from GW, Forgeworld, or Adepticon then we will rule on the question here ... ask 'em if you have 'em
== Aegis Defense Line ==
I'm going to leave this to the player's own devices. When LOS is drawn across the Aegis Defense Line ( regardless of which player included it in their list ) check to see if the target unit is obscured or not. If the unit is obscured, then it receives a 4+ cover save. This applies to both non-vehicles and vehicles alike. I do not however want to turn this into a reason for converting models to a player's advantage. I'm not opposed to the idea of seeing a Sniper Wraithlord in a kneeling position, just don't do it and try to claim the obscured advantage - keep the original model in mind.
== Mindshackle Scarabs ==
Roll for it's effect at the start of each Assault phase.
== Mysterious Terrain & Objectives ==
Mysterious Terrain ... each player may place up to two pieces of Mysterious Terrain during the setup process, in any combination of Forests and / or Rivers. Then use the appropriate rules on Page 91 ( roll when entering or starting ) and apply the results on Page 102 ( for Mysterious Forests ) or Page 103 ( for Mysterious Rivers )
In addition, after rolling to determine which player deploys first ( but before any models are deployed ) one Archeotech Artefact marker ( Page 106 - Impassable & Mysterious Terrain ) must be placed at the center of the table then scatter it 3d6 inches. If a hit is scored, immdiately remove the marker from the table.
Mysterious Objectives ... as noted within the Missions themselves the Mysterious Objectives rule is only used in Crusade, Big Guns Never Tire, The Scouring, and The Emperor's Will.
== War Zone Traits ==
- War Zone Traits ( Page 368 ) ... after both sides have deployed, but before any Scout moves have been made, roll a d6 = on the result of a 1 or 2 the War Zone Traits are in effect for that game = immediately roll on the War Zone Traits table.

08 ) League Structure
This is a local Warhammer 40K league that currently has 32 invitations reserved for the 2014 season - each one of those is for a player within the gaming community that has shown their shared interest in the hobby and this league, and has something unique to bring to the table. Invitations are determined by the League Operator ( LO ) and by suggestion from other current league members.
As the League Operator I will be using this Facebook group page to post updates, current rankings, etc - players themselves are also encouraged to use this group page to schedule games, post battle reports, etc ... as an alternative players can follow the league's status on dakka @ http://www.dakkadakka.com/
dakkaforum/posts/list/ 561951.page ...
Because of the random release schedule of Games Workshop products, the league has adopted the idea of a living ruleset - whereas GW continues to release new material, we can make changes as needed. In some cases these changes will simply be made by the League Operator, while in other cases they will be presented to league members as a vote. The important thing to remember is that any changes made, if any at all, are to maintain the integrity of the league's design - to provide players with an enjoyable gaming experience.
For the 2014 season we are going to build a league structure based on three Eldar concepts: The Seer Council, Guardian Defenders, and Craftworlds.
Farseer: as league operator = Joe M
Warlocks: are players that also have a secondary role within the league
- as league administrator = Tom K
- as league art director = Moe M
- as league record keeper = Francis P
- as league retired charter member = Sean P
- as 2012 league champion = Mike W
- as 2013 league champion = Dan L
Guardian Defenders: are the core players within the league
Craftworlds: are the official venues for the league
- All Things Fun ( Ed & Dina )
- Top Deck Games ( Nick )
