Subject: 1000 Point Tyranids for Tourny (40 Gargoyles)

So I've got my second tournament coming up. My wife and I are doing it together and I have every intention of beating her in points.
It's at my local bunker and my experience so far is no one has had any idea how vicious gargoyles with poison/adrenal glands can be, even against vehicles. So they are an obvious focal point:
Flyrant/Devourers/Old adversary
2x Hive Guard
2x Zoanthrope
11x Termagant
Tervigon
20x2 Gargoyles w/poison and adrenal (perhaps 10x4?)
I feel like the troops coming out of the tervigon give me enough bodies on the field that will simply be hard to remove. The hope is getting endurance on a gargoyle blob. I dont know what is more sound strategically, keeping the mass of 20x2 or
splitting them all up into 3 or 4 groups. It lets me engage more units but also increases the odds of giving up first blood. But it also helps capture when fast attack units are able to control units, which will be in 1 of the games. I'm also worried
about synapse, so maybe bringing in 4 zoanthropes instead of the guard is a good idea?

That's a great list, you'll be hard to beat @ 1k. Just play towards objectives and win.

I would keep the Gargoyles in 2 x 20 formation. This works better with the psychic buffs. You only get 3 Fast Attack choices, so you can't take 4 units of 10 anyway.
2 Zoanthropes and 1 Flyrant is a decent amount of synapse for 1k games. I would definitely keep the Hive Guard - you will want some Rhino-busting ranged firepower. They can kill a Rhino while the Gargoyles clean up the now disembarked occupants.

Deffo split the 40 into more than 2 squads so say 14 14 12 or something just to split the fire. Ideally couleld find 30 points and add the extra 5 for 3x15 units but dunno where you could get them

I would consider running the Zoanthrope as 2 brood of one. Send one chasing and buffing after the gargoyles/guants, and leave one babysitting the Hiveguard.

If worried about synapse and want more points to play with you could drop the flyrant and run a pretty invulnerable parasite in a 20 strong gargoyle brood. Will let you get more gargoyles too! And against geq you will flood the table with rippers! But then again - flyrants rock.

Lots of great suggestions.
For Zoanthropes, I've stopped chasing the buff table and simply kept them stock. I've popped two landraiders with them recently and the feeling is fantastic.
My flyrant I would play very, very safely. I gave him old adversary to ensure he is a killing machine against vehicles and fliers, but what do you all feel about giving him Hive Commander and deep striking a group of gargoyles into their backfield?
The idea being that once the opponent sees the huge advance moving that fast, the third group of gargoyles provides a very difficult choice as far as who he should shoot at, subsequently keeping at least two groups in good standing and avoiding wounds against my big players.
I'm limited to 40 gargoyles though simply because I have 10 to paint today and I doubt I see myself getting more until the new dex.

Your list is pretty awesome at 1000 points, the footprint of 40 gargoyles spaced out is humongous.
I have recently played a double 800 point tournament, and you won't believe what people can bring to these games.
Riptide, wraithknight, 2 heldrakes, 2 bloodthirster, drop pod with 8 combi plasma, double rune priest in drop pod, IG blob with leman russ... so plan ahead what you would do against such a threat.
I would say, either use Hive Commander, and DS a gargoyle brood AND outflank the Tervigon, or keep Old Adversary and use long chains of gargoyles to stay in synapse and OA range of flyrant, and skirt your whole army behind.
Even with 15 gargoyles, most of my army behind got cover

I was foolish when adding up things and left out the cost of AG on the Gargoyles. But, I think this is actually a useful time to bring in a Venomthrope.
He may be slow, but if I run him I can probably let him be within 6" of a brood or two simply because of how much space these guys take up. Getting 5+ cover saves on massive blobs of goyles can end up being very helpful, especially if I can keep him somewhat centered. Moreso if I can cast endurance. So it would be:
Flyrant/Devourers/Old adversary
Zoanthrope (left)
Zoanthrope (right)
Venomthrope (Centerish)
12x Termagants
Tervigon
20x2 Gargoyles (or 12x14x14, havent decided yet)
Is the Venomthrope wishful thinking?

Are the gargoyles in your second list without upgrades? Without upgrades they are pants if using them for your main force. TS scares the hell outta MCs, AG means you can bust open most tanks. Combined makes them into great anything killers enmass. Without them... not so much.
