Subject: 1500 - First Tyranid List, tried for competitive level

Hey guys, I just got into Warhammer a few months ago, and have been studying the Tyranid codex as well as other rules. I have also been studying lists and tactics. So I threw together a 1500 point army for a monthly game night me and my friends have. It is a fun setting, but we might be planning to hold something "tournament style", so I was trying to make a competitive list.
Before I played a 1000 point game against someone else who had only looked over the rules a little bit (at the time) so we ended up with a large number of misplays which ended up giving me an advantage than made him quit (honest mistakes though, so I don't count it as a win). And last time I played someone else with the list I am about to post (which I studied extensively, and even plotted out all the rulings ahead of time to save time) and won in a landslide victory, but the problem is he is one of the least practiced Warhammer players in our group. He knew rulings and had apparently read over his army (Eldar) a good bit, but as was pointed out by another player he made bad choices in units and tactics against me.
I am still new to the game, so I am unsure if the tactics I used were good or if the list would even be considered "competitive", which is why I am posting here. So without further or do, here is my list and tactics that I am hoping to get help with:
HQ:
Hive Tyrant: Wings, Hive Commander, Old Adversary, Twin-Linked Devourers w/ Brainleech Worms 295 (Both Psychic Powers exchanged for Biomancy)
Hive Tyrant: Wings, Hive Commander, Old Adversary, Twin-Linked Devourers w/ Brainleech Worms 295 (Both Psychic Powers exchanged for Biomancy)
Elites:
Doom of Malan'tai: Mycetic Spore 130
Troops:
Tervigon: Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs, Catalyst, Onslaught 210 (All 3 Psychic Powers exchanged for Biomancy)
14x Termagants 70
Heavy Support:
Trygon Prime: Toxin Sacs 250
Trygon Prime: Toxin Sacs 250
Game Against Eldar: I started with only the Doom and Mycetic Spore in Reserves, getting ready to Deep Strike in. I debated putting 1 or 2 Trygon Primes out to Deep Strike too, but I figured that I needed more field presence and that they were resilient enough to survive moving up. Since I was taking on Eldar, and he had 5 vehicles (2 of which were tanks) I figured my best tactics would be to take out the vehicles quickly since those were probably a heavy portion of his points. So I used the two Flying Hive Tyrants in Swooping mode to Vector Strike his 3 vehicles on one side (not the tanks), then my one Trygon Prime had an easy time getting over to the tanks, taking one out in one turn and the other out in the following turn. So vehicles did not seem to be as big of a problem, and were at this point taken care of. The rest of his army wasn't really able to put up much of a fight, until his deep strike and outflank reserves came in, but even then it still took all they had to take out 13 of my 14 original Termagaunt models (I spawned another unit of 11 the turn before with no doubles on the dice, so I wasn't too concerned about my Termagants). I then devoured his new units with a Trygon Prime and a Hive Tyrant, and over the next two or three turns we wrapped most of it up with vector strikes, a couple shots, and mostly lots of Termagants in Assault (only losing a couple more of them, but they are cannon fodder for a reason lol).
So that was how it played out strategy wise. Any help with the list and strategies on how to play these guys more efficiently would be greatly appreciated.
Also as for making the list competitive for my group of friends, this is what the competition looks like army wise (in order from most experienced players to weakest): Tau, Orks, Ultra Marines, Necrons, Eldar, Space Wolves (never really shows up anymore, but he might for the tournament), and Dark Angels (new person who was supposed to start last time but couldn't make it, he says he is new to the game but I have yet to see if he is better or worse than the other new guys or not). So basically the main ones I need to worry about are the Tau, Orks, Ultra Marines, and possibly the Necrons (haven't looked over them, but I heard their resurrection rules are a pain).
Thanks ahead of time guys! ^_^

New to Wargaming, but a quick learner. Hoping to make a great Tyranid list! |

Your list is not bad, but could be refined and quite easily made into a more efficient machine of death. I purposely did not read the section on your opponents' armies, I don't like to tailor lists.
Tyrants: drop Old Adversary on both, and Hive Commander on one (or both). They're not needed, and the reserve bonuses don't stack. Old Adversary isn't needed because you're already rerolling misses, and you don't need to in CC.
Doom is good.
Tervigon and 'gants are great.
Drop the Prime upgrade and Toxin off of one or both Trygons.
If you drop OA, HC, the Prime and toxin off the Trygons, and drop your Gants to 12, you will have enough points for a second Troop Tervigon and 10 more gants.
I think you'd be happy with the results; you gain 'rage' on your Trygons on ld8 for the extra attack (rage no longer has target restrictions), and have almost as much synapse with the extra troop Tervigon.

And OA lets you reroll to wounds which can help.I tend to run them 1 OA and 1 HC when using dual tyrants.I agree with the prime and TS though. I would tossing a nice Ymgral squad for the extra points.

Rerolling wounds when you're wounding on a 2+, especially when you have 9 hits on a target, is unneeded. Further compounding this is the fact that you don't get to use the reroll when rolling for armour penetration... I don't see the value.
Now if their job is to get into close combat, where you're limited to only a few attacks, I could see the reroll being handy. Everything in the Tyranid army has to have a specific job, and I think that the extras on the flyrants are not required for the job they are fulfiling.

I like your list only thing in the intro you said 5 AV but 2 were tanks, were they serpents? If so did he not roll for their shields?
Interesting...
Either way i would go for the special genesteelers because they will ruin a tau/guard gun line all day long.
