I have been playing X-Wing for a few months now. My gaming group and I play on a nearly weekly basis and we have seen some crazy lists and tactics emerge through it. And I am looking forward to bringing some of these to bear in the upcoming Vassal Tournament being hosted by Theorist. My games up util this point have all been lacking something though. that being capital ships. The Star Destroyer is one of the most iconic things in Star Wars for me and ever since starting X-Wing my group and I have been itching to unleash one. While I am aware that there are Rebel frigates en route, I want a flipping Star Destroyer and I want it now!

The dilemma being that a 1/270 scale Star Destoyer would be the size of the gaming table! So I was looking for something of a relative scale. What I found was a very well made model by Ertyl from 2008. Fortune smiled upon me as I found it for a measly 20 bucks on amazon. Got this built up this week, carved a spot out for a Games Workshop flight stand and mounted it on a base that I scratchbuilt. The template and capital ship rules hail from boardgamegeek.com I have done the basecoat and some drybrushing throughout the ship, but my accent and detail colors are as of yet undetermined. So without further ado, may I present the Wrath of Tarkin.

The Wrath of Tarkin is a has been recently renamed in honor of the sacrifice made by one of the Empire’s greatest heroes. Having been in service for over 32 standard years, it is now being deployed to the Outer Rim Territories to assist in the pursuit and elimination of the Rebel terrorists.

We are going to begin playtesting this upcoming week, as it stands the ship is worth a whopping 250 points! I have played a couple games with it and am pretty happy with how it goes down. It has a large amount of ordnance that can be brought to bear, while being very susceptible to well maneuvered crafts getting in the blind spots. All in all I have loved it and wanted to share with all of you. While I’m at it here are some pictures of my existing forces. The playmat is one of two I got from bannersonthecheap.com Two 3′x3′ mats on sturdy vinyl for just over 30 bucks. Not bad at all. Hope you all enjoy and enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Am I alone in not wanting bigger ships than the Large bases in the game?

Because it seems to me it defeats the point of maneuvering when your ship takes up half the board I really think stuff that size should just be the board itself, since they're so much bigger than fighters. That, or you abstract everything down to where an X Wing actually represents a squadron, a Tie represents a swarm, etc. That way the capitol ships can be made small enough to actually be able to do something on the table.

That said, your repaints look awesome, and it looks like it would be an awesome piece for a one off game.

Pardon my ignorance, but that's a Galactic Republic era Star Destroyer as seen in Episode II / III, correct? If so, whats the size difference between it and a Episode IV Star Destroyer?

Per Wookeepedia, The Venator class Star Destroyer (pictured above) is 1137 meters long (4.2 meters/13.4 feet long in game scale). The Imperial I Star Destroyer seen in Episode IV is 1600 meters long (5.9 meters/18.9 feet long in game scale).

Not sure you need a whole lot more. Capital ships like the victory class Star Destroyer are slow and wouldn't move very far in contrast to small fighter. i think it would be hard to find game balance for it. But in a fun match it would be interesting

Looks very cool. Are you using the normal movement templates? And what is that shuttle in the middle of the A-Wings?

Looks like a Senator's Shuttle (check the base) using a model of a Consular Class Cruiser (used by Obi-Wan and Qui Gon Jin in the opening of the Prequels) from one of the older game systems.

I misidentified it in this post initially as a Corellian Star Shuttle used by Palpatine as a diplomatic shuttle in the prequels.

I use the normal 1 straight maneuver template. The ship can either go forward one or pivot the nose by one. As to the shuttle, it is a piece from the last Star Wars starship battles game. I run it as the Senators shuttle. I am trying to expand my collection of scenario pieces that produce some much more epic games.
