Hey All,

First off, I am just assuming this is the best place to talk about this, if it needs to be moved, MODs feel free.

I saw an article by Reecius on BOLS about how fast the tournament scene is moving and how it is going to be difficult for organized play. One of the comments really got me thinking though, the NFL has an organizational body that does things like make rules and provide clarification. What if 40k were to have this system? Obviously as far as rules go, GW is the ultimate arbiter, and it would be great if they reinvolved themselves in tournament play, but it seems unlikely that this will happen.

Right now tournaments are run purely on an individual club level, and that is great! Obviously clubs know what their players want better than some large group does. What about national level tournaments though? Do you think there is a need for some of the well respected members of the hobby to get together (via webcast or something) and create a quarterly "national rules packet" where things are clarified etc, etc and take some of the burden off local TO's from making some of these hard decisions? Would the community be interested in something like that? Finally, what technical and other problems would need to be sorted out to make this work?

I envision this as not a 'dakka' thing or a NOVA thing, but a community thing that takes the best people (organizers and players) who play at high levels of competition throughout the US and attend quarterly meetings where basic guidelines are set forth for good tournament formatting. Individual shops could use them if they wanted to, but it might be a good resource for people to look at and have a good starting point. Although I should by no means put in my own two cents about how tournaments should be run (as I am a player, I don't play nearly as often as I should, and I have never run a tournament) I would be happy to donate my time in other ways (organizing meetings, webcasts, etc). What do you guys at Dakka think?

I would like to see a player based committee for managing the competitive scene. There are examples of this working. The old Decipher Star Wars CCG (http://www.starwarsccg.org/) has been kept alive for more than a decade by its players. Though it was sanctioned by Decipher; who directly handed the reigns over to the player base when they lost the license from Lucas Film.

Unfortunately, I think most of the TO's of the larger venues want to do their own things. They do put in a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to do what they do, so I don't really blame them. There's also GW frustrating things by continuing to releasing content with no apparent quality control. GW could even radically turn things around, but it will probably not be until major ownership or management changes happen. I'll just go play X-Wing in the meantime.

But I do dream of some Reddit or Stack Exchange style of site that uses consensus voting to select a rules council and discus balance issues.

I don't think I like the idea, honestly. Once you get a single body of people with the self-importance of individual TOs trying to determine what is right and not right for 40k...things will go downhill.

Imagine if those elected 'happen' to be from the dedicated pro or anti FW camps...and the problems that will causeon the others.

Let TOs get their own tournaments setup the way they please, there are plenty of ways for them to see the rules from other events and determine if they'd be right for their own. Or they can totally ignore what the player base wants and be ego-ridden individuals like some insist on being. :-)

How are those Rogue Trader Tournies going these days?

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.
