Looking at building my first mercenary army. I feel somewhat obligated to roll pirates, so Talion charter it is.

I'm reading through their book and I'm kind of assuming then that my army is basically going to be seadogs+seasoning. I'll probably be running Shae. That aside, any suggestions on units to pick up / characters to field / ..er.. strategy?

Looks like my local meta tends to play around 35 points, so that's where I need to have my goal set.

I'd love any help I can get.

Thanks

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

Its generally about swarming the enemy with gobs and gobs of pirates with 4+ tough.

Send your unit of Press Gangers against enemy infantry to refill your Sea Dogs with bodies.

As for what you must get, Bosun Grogspar, Mr. Walls, Lord Rockbottom, and Doc Killingsworth are mandatory for the Sea Dog-star. Rockbottom gives the unit regular Tough, Doc makes it 4+, and the Bosun keeps them on their feet when they pass those tough rolls. Mr. Walls buffs the unit with his Mini-feat for one turn, and he's another body for the unit.

Not mandatory, but very good, is First Mate Hawk. She's a blender in melee and makes Sea Dogs almost as good(weapon master against things that aren't jacks or beasts) plus she has Acrobatics which helps with assassinating key enemy models.

The other thing you want to get for Shae is the Commodore Cannon. Only his lists can use it. One of the longest ranged weapons in the game, and quite powerful.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

And there´s an almost cheesy list including the Galleon & Montador.
That´s some serious firepower!

Welcome to Talion, the smallest faction in the game. You are fighting blindwater or even the hogs for smallest faction. With that said. Use Captain Montador with Galleon, here is how his shenanigans go.

Turn *
Montador gives galleon 3 focus.
Montador uses fire all ranged weapons out of turn.
Galleon fires his cannons then fires his harpoon, he drags now mauled jack to him.
Galleon now activates.
Galleon hits jack,
Galleon uses cargo claw boosted,
Galleon uses cargo claw again,
Galleon uses throw (into another jack or caster)
Galleon fires canons into downed (caster or jack)
Galleon fires harpoon on knocked down caster,
Galleon drags poor sod to him,
Galleon uses last focus to buy cargo claw attack,
Galleon smears (caster or jack),
Game is now over.

That is how Galleon rolls each turn.

I have yet to fight anyone with this setup in my local meta. Galleon is sad. All players refuse to feed him.

I had my second game tonight with another player who is figuring out the rules as well. He ran elves.

So. New question - how on earth do you protect yourself from an assassin squad that has ten inch guns that ignore all cover, LoS and intervening units? Or is it literally a case of "keep your caster on the other side of the board and out of the fight?"

Montador's broadsides spell allows all warjacks in his battlegroup to make a single normal ranged attack, not a single attack with each of it's weapons. So you cannot fire all of galleon's cannons and it's harpoon. It's cannons also do not gain extra shots from rapid fire when fired with broadsides. Also - I believe that, in order to use your melee attacks AND your ranged attacks in the same activation, you have to drag an enemy with the harpoon gun first. So I do not think that you could throw a model in melee and then shoot it with your cannons, and then harpoon it back into melee. To maximize output, you would have to harpoon the target and drag it to you, attack it in melee, throw it, then shoot it with the cannons.

Not sure about the first part, but you can use regular ranged weapons and end with drag, THEN buy the extra melee attacks.
