I've been playing BT for almost five years now. I've enjoyed their insane standard unit stats, nice armor saves, and elites choice spread. However, I've discovered that I'd like to try something new. I'd like to start IG.

I'm thinking Death Korps, but its not set in stone. Something that emulates their style of play, however, is what I'm trying to shoot for. My question to y'all is: what should it compose of? What are the pros and cons of said unit choices? What are the cons? Can I create a decent, heavy hitting IG army in a 1250 pts. limit?

I'm shooting for an efficiency army, not themed, btw. Please share your thoughts and/or advice. It is greatly appreciated.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person, who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

If you're looking for an optimized list, there are quite a few that have been made. The optimized lists are all pretty much the same even though the codex has tons of different options. This is because most of those options are either bad or focus on making your poor guardsmen more expensive.

Some may tell you to go for "Assaulty" guard. Do whatever you want, but the general concencus is that "assaulty" is ass.

A few keys are standard troops choices with complimentary heavy/ special weapons, limit the wargear and use more than 1 tank.

Feel free to post a list. I'm sure there are plenty of people, myself included, that will enjoy trimming it down for ya.

The trick is to go one way or the other, you have to play to the extreames

1)Like Armor? Take 3 russ huss and as many hell hounds and chimeras as you can fit on the table.

2)Like troops? Take 180+ in 1850, and as many heavy weapons as you can fit on the table.

3)You can do death corps, but remember metal models are god awfully expensive, but if you have the cash....

Pretty much, play to extreames so that you neutralise a portion of your opponents army with out firing a shot. ie, all of his heavy bolters are wasted against av12, or all of his lascannons are wasted shooting at 6pt guardsmen.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been in contact with a couple friends who have a little IG experience, and I think I have a general idea. I can't get too specific, mainly because a) I have to go buy and build the army, and b) I don't have the codex in front of me.

beside the obligatory HQ and two troops, I was thinking about a stormtrooper squad, a pair of heavy weap. squads (I guess 1 anti-tank and one anti-inf), and some snipers. After the basics are assembled however, I have nothing set in stone.

If any of y'all have specific experiences with either assault, tread-heavy, troop-heavy, or mix armies, please share them.

I won't be able to get a list up for some time, as I'm at boarding school until mid-June.
