Me my broth and a pal started with menoth, trollbloods and khrdor playing at 35 and 50 points. He is (the trollblood player), said after the last game he not haveing any fun with it and would like to find a different army. What he would like to is run more heaves ,less troops ,do more damage in melee ,not be so out matched in the shooting, and it has to a hordes army.

Have him look into Skorne. We run beasts better than any other with pain giver beast handlers. While historically we are not known for shooting the new Incindiarii have been a great addition and even our Mammoth which is the best Gargantuan hands down can shoot some AOEs and smash face. Also if he wants to do more damage in melee show him the Bronze Back, it is not unheard of to have a single enraged and abused BB wreck a Colossal in one turn. And unlike Mulg the BB is not a character and therefore can be taken in multiple lists for some tourneys. And if you want a real treat an enraged land stand Molik Karn on the charge is rolling out P+S 15 and rolling out 5 dice worth of damage (2D6 on the damage roll +1for Weapon master +1for the charge and +1for last stand) for an average of 32.5 damage on one swing with an on average hit that can hit DEF 17 and he can boost attack and damage rolls after he rolls them. He auto dies at the end of the activation with Last Stand but with Side Step and reach could wreck multiple heavies making his points back or sidestep to an enemy caster/lock and will kill him no problem. We also run Gatormen Posse better then Blindwater with Pain Giver Task Masters, and the Posse is one of the most feared units in the game especially under us.

Skorne will still leave him outmatched in shooting

The closest I could recommend is Legion
He won't do as much damage in melee as a Skorne would, but he would be able to field a great deal of heavies (again Skorne could probably field more) and have great shooting

I don't know about Skorne lacking shooting.... I've yet to have a game where my Incindiarii have not performed brilliantly. Most people I play survive the initial blast damage just to have that Continuous Fire take out whatever survived. You also need to consider their other ranged options... Slingers are great for taking out troops and jacks and provide cheap souls which makes your army stronger. Reivers with UA are expensive but on mini-feat with CRA they are like a surgical knife. So while Legion is shooting arrows and throwing spears Skorne have a variety of ranged units that can throw out AOEs, AOEs on direct hits both with CEs and then there is the straight up precision shooting arrows (really darts/bullets). Then there are our warbeasts and solos, Raiders providing far strike and can shoot stealthed models, Shaman providing a boostable shot that ignore LOS, the extroller soulward to hand out Eyeless Sight and can also pack a punch himself with some souls against living models.

Of course I am biased being a Skorne player and a little biased against Legion as my buddy plays them and complains about them. I also will take 4 beast handlers for 2pts rather than 2 Shepherds for the same.

So overall the way I see it Skorne will run beasts better, beat face in melee better, has a wider variety of ranged options from units, slightly more armor on the beasts, with beast handlers the best beast support unit in the game, will be slower with SPD4 to Legions SPD6 (this is remedied slightly with the Gladiator Animus Rush which is present in pretty much every Skorne list).
Legion brings better shooting options in the beasts, does have more ranged units if similar overall, slightly lower armor on the beasts, but better utility with pathfinder and eyeless sight on the beasts, great lesser warbeasts with shredders.

It's a toss up have your brother do some research and also consider asthetics and fluff if he is into that stuff.

Yeah Skorne and Legion are both pretty good choices...a circle gravel army may be fun, but limited...

It will be pretty much what he likes, Dragons or Beasts

Before spending extra money, I suggest you guys give Steamroller a shot if you haven't already. Non-scenario games are pretty much gunline auto-wins, as there's no incentive for a shooting army to move and going up against one of the better gunline armies (Menoth) and one of the punchiest armies (Khador) would leave him feeling underpowered.

If you guys are already running Steamroller scenarios, then I'd second the suggestion for Skorne. They can run quite a few Heavies well - and have some of the toughest Heavies in the game - and don't depend on shooting too much. If shooting is important to him, he needs to look at Warmachine in order to fulfill the other criteria, otherwise, he should be using shooting to suppress instead of depending on it for damage.

The great thing about how PP has the game set up is getting an army started and trying it out is pretty easy and relatively inexpensive.

Everyone I know who plays the game with any sort of regularity has at least two armies. I have 4 right now and the beginnings of a 5th.

Haha, not the first time I've heard that. I would have recommended either of those two (since I play them both), but Legion definitely has more shooting, though the heavies (in particular) are serious glass cannons.

Hey! Someone has to torture baby elephants all day. It's not like they torture themselves. You should just be happy there is someone to do it.

Skorne might be ugly people, but their Armor and Clothing look absolutely beautiful
