Hello, I've enjoyed some Vassal 40k and in particular some of the great sprites people have made for it. I'd really like to be able to get my hands on .jpeg versions of the sprite sets. I've got the whole 40k module downloaded and have used it repeatedly, but I can't seem to get at the sprite files in any way other than through the Vassal program, and I can't seem to get it out of the program itself. I figure it must be possible, but I'd rather not have to take screenshots of each sprite one at a time. I'm on a mac, if that's relevant.

Surprisingly enough I am looking for the same thing as you- I am using the sprites to make flat 2-d versions of units for use in Epic 40K. I have gotten all my sprites by searching for them on Google Images (and modding what I have for missing units) but I really have no option when it comes to things like Titans, especially as most images I can find can't be traced back to their hosting sites due to the C&D from Games Workshop forcing them down.

Yea, I'm running a Dark Heresy campaign on Roll20.net and being able to use all the sprites from Vassal would make it a million times easier/more accurate, but I can only import .jpeg or .pdf into the Roll20 maps. I figure it must be possible because I've seen enough customized sprite jobs that are obviously modified versions of the current sprites, but for the life of me I can't figure it out. Let me know if you do!

Update! I figured out a way to expand the files, namely using The Unarchiver (http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html), but now there's a new confusion, which is that the images it gives me access to seem incomplete. The Imperial Guard folder only has the files associated with a handful of tanks and characters, and bases. I don't see a file for a single guardsman in there. Likewise with many of the others. The space marines folder doesn't have an image for a standard marine body, just a couple vehicles and terminators. Is there somewhere else these files can be hiding? As I said, when I open up Vassal, all the sprites are there and perfectly usable. Where else could it be getting these things?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Second update (because I know so many of you care): Turns out the majority of the files are in the main file rather than the individual army files (so when you open the first folder '6thbasic' there is a file called vassal40k6thbasic.vmod, open that and you'll find in images the lions share of the sprite images).

Unfortunately the quest is incomplete, because, well, so are the sprites. Turns out the way you get that handy weapon customization on the sprites while inside of Vassal is splitting up all the pieces. So there is no one file of a Chimera or a guardsman. Rather, there are quite a few different files each with arms holding a plasma gun, or lasrifle, or bolted, etc. It may just be that you'll have to hand assemble the sprites in photoshop (or paint?), but I'm now trying to see if there's a way to export finished/assembled sprites from anywhere.

Hmm, I may have to try that process. I mostly need tanks and warmachines, as sprites I have dredged off of google images give me all the troops weapon options that I would ever need.

What did you enter to get your sprites through Google? I've tried google and I've gotten a few large scale files of entire SM armies, which I could work with by slicing up myself in Photoshop or something but I'm looking for Imperial Guard, Inquisition, and Chaos troops primarily, what with needing it for Dark heresy.

I think I put in "Vassal 40K Sprites". Sometimes put the army name before "Sprites".

There is also another site that I have found a bunch on, it's in spanish but you'll get a bunch of sprites in the posts if you scroll through them.

Thanks, that blog got me most of what I need. I'll have to do some photoshop work to slice up the group shots but nothing worth doing is easy right?

I am doing the same thing. I use the group shots and then use MSPaint or Gimp to convert what is lacking for what the armies need in Epic: Armageddon.

Just finished kitbashing last night on models for the main three Eldar superheavies (Void Spinner, Scorpion, Cobra).

One of these days I need to get a photobucket account again both to post a "Paper Epic Armageddon blog with pics on Dakka, and to make them more easily available to other people than the sprites are now. It's really a fun, low cost way to play Epic now that the models are hard/near impossible to get. A 1,000pt Epic army can easily fit on a single sheet of paper.
