A new day, a new time zone.

Right now, I'm testing out my fleet building skills for my planned IN and Necron fleets, so once I get these ironed out, they'll also double as a shopping list. How do they look?

I've been digging through the GW Specialist Games forums, and for the IN list, how would it look if I dropped the Mars, and replaced it with a Dictator, and mounted a Nova Cannon on both Lunars. That'd also leave me with 15 extra points, not sure what to do with those...

Odd points often end up left-out in BfG lists; don't sweat them.

I wouldn't put too much on having NCs anymore; the new "scatter-not-guess" rules made them pretty unreliable. Shooting at anything but closely-packed ships or stuff on big bases is a major crap shoot. Also, that leaves you with only one carrier, the Emperor, and if it is somehow prevented from launching (failed reload roll, for example), you lose all ability to protect against ordnance, much less attack with it.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Ah, I see. Are the Nova Cannon rules under the 'Experimental Rules' heading, because I didn't know they weren't guess anymore. So I should keep the Mars, and torps on the Lunars?

Now, on to buying ships.  Where can I get things like Cobras?  Do they use the same base model as the Firestorm, just different assembly?  Because I can find Firestorms, and Swords in the GW store, but not Cobras.  Nore can I find any of the smaller Necron ships in the GW store (although I can on Ebay...)

Yes, the new nova cannon and ordnance rules are in the FAQ section. I would certainly suggest using the updated rules; it makes your carriers more reliable (no running-out on doubles), and there's some other improvements to the original system.

Cobras are their own design. The unavailability is the joy of an unsupported game. Ebay is your best bet.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Your Imperial Fleet

What are three Cobras to do? Cobras are for squadrons of four or more, preferbly six. You can get salvoes of six torpedoes easily in your list, 90pts is a half a Lunar and what you get for the other 90pts is not worth the firepower and hull or a Lunar. Si8x Cobras have 12 torps though, which is worth it if the manage to strike from a flank and rake through a fleet.

Sword and Firestorm combinators are not really efficient, besides if you want lances take Dauntlesses. A Dauntless is worth three Firestorms but costs 10ptrs less and is more durable.

Enforcers? Are those the Battlefleet Bakka "experimental" Dauntleses with an extra lance wide arc firepower and launch bays replacing the broadasides. They were broken broken broken. If your opponent allows them go ahead but they should cost more than strike cruisers.

The Mars is a nice ship but tries to do too much, buy another Lunar instead, and a Dauntless and skip 20pts from somewhere.

You cant go wrong with an Emperor, they are excellent support for a light cruiser heavy fleet, which is what I recommend you head for. As it happens this fleet is too ecclectic, with a bit of everything and has no real strength of direction. I love variety and recommend it but you need a core or Lunars, Dominators and/or Dauntlesses as the core of your fleet.

The Necron Fleet

Dirges arent much use, Jackals are MUCH better. Use them in squadrons of 4-6 to get behind an important target and portal it so that it loses its firepower for the next turn to two. I have ten Jackals and find them invaluable. The Shroud helps you with passing Ld checks, but is expensive, undergunned (for Necrons) and is vulnerable. There is nothing really wrong with your fleet, except for taking Dirges.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.
