With the dust settling after the glorious run of the GAME EMPIRE 2013 Tournament series, I'd like to take a moment to reflect with the collective 40k community. I personally think it was a good year. Some great tournaments, some ok ones, none sucked. But my opinion will be impartial since I'm angling to promote the damn things. So I want to know what you guys thought. Let me know what you liked, what you didn't, and what should stay the same. I mean things like should we ban Casey from winning Sportsman? Is Travis really that good at writing Christmas themed missions? When will me and Paul stop winning Best Army? House Rule: Grots get a 2++ when fully painted and individually named?

In all seriousness; these comments will be taken into consideration for the 2014 series.

In addition if you have any suggestions to what you want to play this coming year let us know! I have quoted in some words from Paul on the matter below. I agree about the Kill Team idea, you will be seeing more Kill Team tournaments since it is one of the best way to play right now. I'll also be talking with Travis and Chuck about tournament vouchers for those people who donate scenery/ bring down their own stuff for tournament play. In addition to that I'll be seeing if we can do a store wide over haul of the scenery since its really taken a beating this last year.

Would people be opposed to an additional $5 entree fee every once and a while for scenery upkeep? Or something along those lines.

Here are Pauls remarks:

First, I have to say the GE events are the best in tow.

Second, I would like to toss out some ideas, just suggestions really, soon.

I am really up for the Kill Team, I think it needs to be the official rules or a more written up set up rules here. The new rules have six scenarios and no psykers, which I think is a good thing. I would really like to see some themed tournaments. Like, leave your MC at home, epic heros may attend, better bring wheels, or flyers beware, storms are raging, stuff like that. I also like the idea of mini RTTs on weekday nights. I also think a GT would be great in May. I really think all events should require three color min and no proxies. I would even say "as modeled" should be enforced. We spend a lot on figs and walking in with whatever one has laying around is frustrating. I really find it hard to fight empty flying stands, which has happened to me.

I would like to see more terrain too, can we bring stuff in the night before to have more cool stuff? I can bring mine in if I know it will be put away after the event if I can't make it. Maybe we could make a terrain donation for our entrance fee, so I buy a 40k kit to get into a RTT, then build it out to return it for my next entrance fee. The store would get some good new stuff and we could enjoy the community effort.

Now to start some form of conversation I don't think we will be going as far as enforcing WYSIWYG harshly unless it's called for. Since we have started having the Fully Painted to Win requirement we have been seeing painted armies more frequently. But no empty flying stands or half built marines standing in as orks.

And I also think we will be doing a 'Weather' themed tournament. Maybe an 'Escalation' tournament with a modified Str D profile, could be fun. And possibly a flipped force org chart, 6 Fast attack slots all scoring? Who knows but lets talk it up a bit

So Casey, Teddy, Henry, and I played 3 games of kill teams. We all had a blast. Teddy went 3-0 with vet Dark Angels, he had modeled a missile launcher dude with storm shield, which is legal and awesome IMHO. Henry took second with his Necron list, massive fire power and tomb blades, they work in kill team, who knew. I was third with my Thousand Sons, AP 3 inferno bolts are the bomb, when you can spot rolling 4 ones in a row. Casey brought SM and his sportsman game.

We decided that the kill team GW rules are just ok. We all love the timed games so we ask that they stay in. The scenarios are great, one is a hill mission that favors grots and the likes, so it needs to be altered. Maybe 3 VP for hill control and maybe a percentage of your army instead of the 1 VP for each figure as it stands. The specialists rules are way better, so I would include that. The warlord trait table is great, but I can see some going south on that. The lack of Psykers is not good IMHO, I don't think people bring that much and thus it might be moot. I used my GK last time, but I don't think it was a game changer. Thousand Sons would really be good with the sorcerer and his spells. I think I would like to play some more times and print up the rules as we see them. Any comments on this?

While I haven't come out to any of the tourneys, I will say that I think the terrain restock is much needed. I do plan on trying a tourney sometime, I'm interested in variations such as no allies, 0-2 FOC, and Kill Team.

My personal wishlist for GE 2014 tournaments (bear in mind I make 6 out of the 12 a year making me less than the most dedicated but still a familiar face )

1. Keep the 4 "big" events,
2. I would like to see some sort of trophies along the lines of what Mike and I have discussed before. My offers still stand on the Mike!
3. Using the entry as a Terrain restock fee would be a cool idea that I have no problem with at all. I would even participate in building and painting said terrain if necessary.
4. I would like to see the format for the tournaments at GE solidified and posted far in advance. This could, and should, include a time line just like the 2013 thread but even more solid info for each event. I would like to see the opening post for that thread having a detail run down of each event.
5. Keep the 3 color minimum requirement for winning best overall.

What I don't want:
1. Escalation, Stronghold Assault, Apoc in events regularly. Every now and then in special events I am cool with but not in place of the regular second Saturday events.
2. Kill Teams tournaments replacing second Saturday events. I am sure you guys are having a blast playing Kill Teams and I love that you're having fun but I personally don't like playing below 1500. (If I want to play a skirmish sized game competitively I would just play my Protectorate army or pick up Malifaux)

1. Yes, I agree, keep the big four, but make one a GT.
2. I in store plaque would be the coolest, IMHO. It would give all a chance to see a goal to work for and we could actually see how many time Casey wins best sportsman.
3. I am glad you agree with this, maybe we could plan a terrain building day and pump out some amazing stuff. I did the bocage stuff, which I saw Warlord now sells something really similar now.
4. This is tough for the TO. They have the Dakka, FB, and the GE site that would have to be maintained. I would suggest Dakka be the primary, but that is problematic.
5. I think this is good and less a problem than it was in the past. I think the ones that don't like this rule are really gone already for other reasons.

Dislikes
1. I think this is "in need of testing". I see people play with the quad gun wall and it really is a big issue, but I have also learned to use it against them. If you keep things to 4-5 objectives, then turtling up no longer works. Also, these additions look like they might be here to stay. They are already in the main rule book, so the next addition will probably include them as well. I remember the Horde rule in WFB had the same effect on players, it was a great game changers, whether it wreck the game is still open to opinion though.
2. I would never want Kill Team to replace a 2nd Saturday either. I would love to see it on the last Saturday and/or on a Tuesday night. BRING BACK THE MINI RTT, is my chant.

I hope some more will chime in on this, the ideas are flowing and the space is really nice, best in Southern California for sure.
