Basically its in the title, would lord zhufor be the best hq or is there somthing better? Goin for 1850 points.

The 30K rules in Massacre do a great job at capturing the WE ferocity. I highly recommend using those rules even in normal 40k games. Kharn is even in Massacre as well. Obviously having to buy both Betrayal and Massacre to get all the necessary rules for building a legal army may be a bit daunting, but if you enjoy the background of the WE and/or the heresy at all, you will really enjoy and appreciate the Horus Heresy books.

if you are asking about characters, then yes, zhufor is vastly superior to kharn.

Is he the only option? Hardly!

A bike lord or juggernaut lord with the AoBF is one of the most killing HQ's in the game. On a side note, you can pack up a terminator lord with berserkers in a land raider and give the raider invisibility with belakor.

Id like to stick with a character hq for fluff wise but i also wanna be as competetive as possible

Then I definitely suggest a 30k army list. They just rock in assault. Given the changes to 40K, no one has a strong argument not to play against it.

I play straight khorne daemons so i was kinda hoping they would bring some shooting along, aside from my thirster and soul grinder i got no shooting, and i just thought having a few units able to shoot and pick off a few would help my daemons out quite a bit

I dont have the csm codex yet but i thought zhufor was pretty darn good for his cost, plus is pry the best model ive seen besides belakor (who i also run) was kinda goin for a fluffy yet competetive army
