Hey Dakka,

I'm a fairly new 40k player, so I thought I'd sign up and add my voice to the mix. Christmas seemed like a great time to expand one's army, so I picked up a second Platoon box, some snap cadians and a Hellhound, and converted a few minis to make a (minimum loadout) 1200 pt army. Here's my list of models so far:

Models

- Command Squad: Commander w/ plasma pistol,1 regimental standard, 3 Meltaguns
- Command Squad: Commander w/ bolt pistol, 1 vox caster, 1 Melta Gun, 2 Plasma Guns

-Infantry Squad 1: w/ 1 flamer,1 Vox, Sgt.
-Infantry Squad 2: w/ 1 flamer,1 Vox, Sgt.
-Infantry Squad 3: w/ 1 GL,1 Vox, Sgt.
-Infantry Squad 4: w/ 1 GL,1 Vox, 1 Sniper & Sgt. w/ bolt pistol and power sword

-HWS: w/ Lascannons. (tripods and 1 crouch guy, 1 stand guy)
-HWS: w/ Autocannons. (tripods and 1 crouch guy, 1 stand guy)
-HWS: w/ Missile Launchers. (standing guys)
-HWS: w/ Heavy Bolters. (lying down or propped up on sandbags)
-HWS: w/ Mortars. (bipods and standing guys)

-3 Sentinels w/ magnetized weapons (any loadout)

-1 Chimera w/ multi-laser & HB
-1 Leman Russ w/ magnetized weapons (any BT variants)
-1 Griffon heavy mortar w/ HB
-1 Hellhound w/ magnetized weapons (any variant)

So that is what I physically have so far. Totals at 87 miniatures, which I realize is pretty low for an IG army
For now I've only been playing small, basic skirmishes with my friend who primarily uses his Tau army. I haven't played a battle with all my new troops yet, so this is the bare minimum list that I'm planning to use, until I can buy more, or develop strategies. I'm trying to force him into using as little as possible, since I can put more troops on the field.

Minimum Loadout List = 1200 pts.

HQ
+CCS w/ nothing
Elite
- N/A
Troops
+Inf Platoon
- PCS w/ nothing
- 20 man combined Inf Squad w/ 2 flamers
- 10 man meat shield w/ nothing
- 1 HWS w/ Lascannon
- 2 HWS w/ Autocannon
- 2 HWS w/ Mortars
+Vet Squad w/ nothing in Chimera
Fast Attack
+ 3 Scout Sentinel Squad w/ Lascannons
+ 1 Devil Dog w/ MultiMelta
Heavy Support
+ 1 LRBT w/ no upgrades
+1 Griffon w/ nothing

I plan to use my CCS to twin link my LC & AC HWS against his hammerhead, while bombarding his infantry with mortar fire. Then I'm going to outflank my Sentinels into his rear line, and send my Devil dog down the side to get rid of his broadsides, while pie plating anything with the LRBT. My main blob will be backed up by the PCS, and I'm sure he'll send his kroot to a forest, so I want to get rid of them with mortar fire first, if possible, so i can focus on the fire warriors. His Crisis suits always have the pesky 2+ Armor save, which I plan to get around.... hopefully. But if he goes more mech, i want to swap out the LRBT with a Vanquisher (+5pts) and sub out a HWS Autocannon (-5pts.) for another mortar (to keep it at 1200 pts). So hopefully everything has a purpose and multiple targets for which it is specialized.

And... there it is

So, if you're bored or feel like being helpful, feel free to share your thoughts on what I have/should get, or maybe if I should alter my strategies to take town my friend's Tau!!!!

Hmmm... depending how many troops he has you may consider taking a hellhound instead. bigger template against his troops.

Haven't played against Tau in 6th edition. Heard they are quite pain in the as. I'm not a professional but here are some thoughts. Might work, might not.

My philosophy is to always have the quantity on my side. always take 2 of one choice. If you lose one you still have one left to finish the job try to get in close with them. They are not good at close quarters, neither are you, but you can drown him in quantity and some power weapon armed sergeants might work.

I myself go infantry heavy with 2 platoons of 50 men each and 4 veteran squads in chimera. Backed up with tanks. (usually in 2000pts games)

You should get some special weapons for your veterans and make use of their BS4. In a chimera they are a good fire base. 3melta/plasma and a heavy weapon team is lots of fire power. 4 infantry squads is a bit too small maybe? You don't need 100 of them but maybe 2 groups of 30 each?

I think you have a really nice collection though

Thanks for the replies guys!

@CA: Thank you for the advice . I played my friend and his Tau army on Saturday at our local gaming spot, and I won by a landslide!!!. I used the minimal 1200 pt list that i posted, and opted for the vanquisher, 3 mortar HWS and the Devil Dog w/ MM. We just did a simple deathmatch because I want to get better at the game before moving on to missions and such. By the end he killed two of my squads, 2/3 of my LC HWS and 2 of my outflanked sentinels. By the time he surrendered the only troops he had left were 2 firewarriors running off the board, 2 pathfinders, and 2 broadsides that were not in a position to do anything; since the front armor on th LR is 14, he had nothing left to penetrate without moving very far in the open, in an attempt to flank

I have to say, contrary to popular belief, the mortars I took with me, combined with the Griffon ended up being the star of the show. They wiped out nearly half of his army, including one of the crisis suits! The only thing I didnt really use effectively was the chimera with the vets inside, because its weapon was destroyed by his hammer head. This is generally what his list was:

-Command Crisis suit team (4 suits) with fusion blasters and a basic loadout
-1 X12 Firewarrior Team
-1 X12 Firewarrior Team
-1 X10 Pathfinder Team w/ 2 rail rifles
-2 Broadsides w/ every missile possible (I think he was trying this out for kicks)
-Hammerhead w/ Rail gun, Seeker missiles & BC

The table was basically half city, sort of like the edge of town. We rolled for board sides and I took the downtown area, which provided a lot of cover behind buildings. This really made my mortars useful. He took the outskirts side, with hills, barriers and a trench for cover. He won first turn. His broadsides hid behind this stone outcrop and managed to get successful cover saves from my good AP shots 5 times! Either way I will admit the table definitely gave me the advantage. I also think he underestimated my list's potential since it seemed so basic. Loads of fun

Welcome!
This is Interesting, I play guard too, and my friend that plays Tau has almost the exact same list. Though our tastes in Guard seem to differ a little bit. I love me some autocannons, so I take them whenever I can. I also love my manticore, even if he spaces out his troops, firewarriors and pathfinders alike just fall to it.

It sounds to me like you did well against the xeno scum, you may just make captain yet soldier. Keep at it, and your tactics and strategies will improve. When you move onto objective based missions, remember to play the mission, killing scoring units, like weak firewarriors and kroot should take priority in most circumstances. If you start to see large mech suits that tower over buildings and quickly overwhelm your forces, see the 40k tactics section for advice from the imperiums best and brightest on how to bring them down, as nothing is invincible! (except screamerstar. if you see that, do what a guardsmen does best, run.)
