Daft Q I know, but I can't help but wonder.

I just bought the Neverborn wave 1 deck, I didn't actually know I would get the growth upgrade card with my Nephilm box.
So I have all the cards in the faction deck, many of which are dupes from Liliths set.
Duped the Nephilm. and when I buy Pandora, I will dupe those too.

So I can't help but wonder, if I plan on buying several boxes, am I really only paying for 4 or 5 upgrade cards in the faction decks that I won't get through boxed sets?

Yes, if you're getting 2nd ed boxed sets, then all the decks are getting you are a few generic upgrades not sold with sets.

It's unclear how many generic upgrades won't be sold with their core kits. For instance, the Nephilim box came with the growth upgrade (highly useful though not technically essential for running them) while McMourning didn't get the Transfusion upgrade (which fits into the same category). Until all of wave 1 is released, it won't be clear, however, if you're fine photocopying a page or two from the rule book then you're not missing anything by not buying the decks.

Yeah, I will be getting the big book when I can, right now it isn't in stock anywhere and I am saving for an Xbox One, so no money to spare. So also no other way of seeing the Wave 1 cards just yet.

I did get the impression I would be spending a fair bit for very little, still.. the 6 factions I want to own will set me back another £25 I guess, the cost of an army book in most hobbies, not too terrible.

That said, I wouldn't have bought this deck had I known the growth card was in the Nephilm box.

It depends on whether you are going to devote to that faction and what wave it is

I didn't think I needed the Arsenal Deck till I played my first game last night. Although all my purchases that I played in last night's crew were M2E boxes I forgot that none of them came with the generic faction upgrade cards. So yeah, on order! You can usually get em for about $8. Not a huge expense if you want them. On the other hand, if you don't need the cards they're in the rulebook.

feth that. just use the Poker playing cards like is discussed. Get the models, decks can wait.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

If you have 1E models and stat cards then the decks are worthwhile. 2E models have relevant cards inside so unless you absolutely need those generics, I'd say don't worry.

They're talking about the Arsenal Decks (units and upgrades), not the Fate decks (fancy poker decks).

Personally, in my limited experience, I'd recommend a Fate deck with your starter as essential purchases. While a poker deck is perfectly usable, but constantly cross referencing which suit in Malifaux is which suit on a poker deck along with learning the rules and triggers would be maddening.

The benefit of the arsenal decks is not having to photocopy the upgrade cards out of the books, right?

solkan, yeah.

regarding fate decks, I used a poker deck for a while before picking up a used fate deck. I definitely don't consider them necessary.

Man, I feel like a chump. I had been religiously downloading all the 2e card updates, but deleted them one day because I thought they would always be on the site.

Guess what? They're not. Guess who's picking up a faction deck now....

You should have hit up the people on the Malifaux boards for them. I'm sure about 10 different people would have helped you out. I still have copies of all the .zip files at work.
