Raef, Hollywood, Granger is back in the third chair for our annual predictions episode!
Up first: Back in the beginning of 2013 we made some predictions about what the year would bring to the geek universe...now we look back and see how we did.
Later it's time to look forward to 2014! What do we hope/expect to see from the new year for games, geek culture and more!
And as a bonus: There is an extra segment at the end of the episode in which Raef and Russ talk X-box One.
All that and our other not-too-horrible segments including:
- Total Fan Girl
- Do You Ever Notice
- The Hollywood Minute
- News
- & More

Great episode as usual. Love the yearly predictions. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, I'd say that Monsters Inc and Despicable Me 2 would qualify as sci-fi. Monsters Inc features technology that allows inter-dimensional travel. Despicable Me 2 features all manner of sciencey-finctional technology.

Is it me, or is Raef kind of a Debbie Downer?
EDIT: please disregard - in hindsight, I was just in a bad mood this morning on the way to work when I was listening. It turns out I'm the Debbie Downer.

I'm not through the whole episode yet. In fact, I'm not through the recap of your 2013 predictions. However, I would like to point out that Uwe Rosenberg had another game published in 2013 besides Caverna. "Glass Road" is NOT about farming! It's about....glass blowing. Something you likely wouldn't do in real life, Craig. Oh...and the setting? Medieval/Renaissance Germany....

Just an observation about the prognostication game this year (could have happened every year, but I only noticed it this year):
When Raef had a multi-part prediction, if he got any part of that prediction wrong, then he got no credit at all for his prediction.
When Russ had a multi-part prediction, he tended to argue that he should get partial credit, and the other two hosts tended to relent to this pressure (giving Russ some points).
I haven't listened to the 2nd half of the predictions (the 2014 ones), but the new points system for the game sounds like a nice improvement!

So Raef mentioned an audible book called Expanse that is the best thing ever that he's listening to. I can only find one book called Expanse, and it is book 7 of a series by Ryk Brown. Is that the one he's talking about? If you are going to mention something so mind-blowing, please give more details about it so the rest of us can enjoy it too! Thanks.
And great episode. I really like the prediction episodes.

First book in the series is called Leviathan Wakes, followed by Caliban's War and lastly by Abbadon's Gate. I'm not sure where "The Expanse" comes from as a title for the trilogy, as I can't recall actually seeing that...then again I dowloaded them as e-books, so I didn't really see much in the way of cover blurbs. "James S.A. Corey" is a pseudonym for two guys - Daniel Abraham, and Ty Franck. Interestingly, Franck is George R.R. Martin's personal assistant. Fortunately, he did not inherit his boss' tendancy to take 5 years between books.
Anyway, I thought they were good books - I don't think I loved them as much as the D6G guys, but I did enjoy them.

Good show as usual.
The Expanse series has been talked about several times in the main show, and has a lost chapter episode dedicated to itself. Which is probably why they glossed over it.
I think they authors themselves named it the Expanse series, it is clearly labeled on the books I've bought. Btw, there has been an announcement that Orbit has signed them for 3 more books and 5 novellas in the series. Also there is a tv series in the planning stages.

Just finished the 2nd part of the prognostications and it seems like the new point system worked out much better. I always thought having a 'no opinion' option was very strange for a segment whose whole point was for you guys to go out on a limb and take (semi-educated) guesses on what may come, so I like that it is basically removed from the table now.
I was laughing a bit when Raef was predicting a super-hero movie would come out of the woodwork in 2014...Raef, you should know that big tentpole multi-million dollar productions all have their release dates pre-planned these days almost 3 years ahead of time! A google search for 'superhero movies in 2014' will turn up all sorts of pages letting you know what movies are going to come out this year (like this page, for example):
http://www.superherostuff.com/blog/movies/upcoming-superhero-movies-201020112012/
I think the concept of the prediction was a good one...saying that a super-hero movie will hit a certain level on rotten tomatoes for the fan+critic average, but you just should have looked over what movies were coming out this year and picked one to sake your claim on ( IMHO).
Finally, Craig I think you got a way with one when you said that the most codexes GW ever put out in a year was 5. This last year (2013), about 1/3 of the way through the year GW suddenly flipped some sort of switch and went ape-crazy in putting out rules for 40K. With their financials tanking, I think you can assume they'll probably keep this pace up (because it is a way to generate income that doesn't require all that much capital to produce compared to models), or even exceed it in 2014.
Plus, GW is now putting out 'supplement' codexes (aka sub-codexes) as well. So like the Eldar codex got the 'Iyanden' sub-codex, for example.
So in 2013 alone there were these 'major' codexes released:
Dark Angels, Chaos Daemons, Tau, Eldar, Space Marines, Inquisitors (digital only), Adeptas Sorroritas (digital only).
Plus these supplementary codexes:
Iyanden (Eldar), Farsight Enclaves (Tau), Black Legion (Chaos Space Marines), Clan Raukaan (Iron Hands Space Marines) & Sentinels of Terra (Iron Fists Space Marines).
Not to mention these full-fledged expansions to 40k:
Apocalypse (including two other Apocalypse Warzone releases: pandorax & damocles), Escalation & Stronghold.
So not only do you probably need to clarify what 'type' of codex your prediction is referring to (does it include codex supplements, like Iyanden or not), at the very least!

As far as Raef's movie prediction, I think there was a misunderstanding about how movie production works, that being said, if Guardians of the Galaxy does well, then he'll get his points from that.

A bit iffy promoting CMON based on their communications about their KS projects which are basically terrible
(and I say this as a backer of several CMON projects, some delivered, some still to come)
concentrate on the games, the box contents, the great value, the fun or whatever, just not communication

Do you have a specific project you have found them lacking in Backer Updates? I've backed three CMON projects (Zombiecide, Sedition Wars, and Rivet Wars) and all were delivered and communicated well.
I know Relic Knights was delayed, but there has been LOTS of communication around it.

In terms of CMON KS projects I've got first hand knowledge of
I've backed and got Sedition Wars I really like it, but the communication has not been great especially over fixes for missing bits/warped boards, the state of play regarding the solo rules etc
(yes you can visit the studio McVey forums for more info but KS backers should be communicated with via the KS)
Relic Knights (again I'm a backer) had pretty terrible communications until recently when Soda Pop stepped in directly to handle things (I'm really keen to get my hands on this one)
Wrath of Kings has been good so far so thumbs up there (and hopefully they can keep up this level of attention for all their projects in the future)
Even updates that don't say/show much will help keep people happy and prevent KS comments from becoming too poisonous just because they show the company is listening, and real grief in a KS comments tends to spill over into forums & stores and kill the buzz about a new game
(don't take this to mean I've a downer on the company, I'm sure I'll back projects & buy stuff from them in the future I just wish they could stay a bit more active on KS when they don't actually have a project running)

Since we all know Craig's dislike games that simulate growing crops in "Olde-E Times", I predict that the following will be Craig's new favorite game of 2015!!!
Professional Farmer 2014!
""Professional Farmer 2014" has a broad variety of crops, depending on the environment and climate, with which the farmer can cultivate the fields diversely, effectively and with a high yield. Even crop rotation plays an important role in planning! The integrated seasons influence the game and provide the player with a constant stream of tasks and jobs.
The local farmers market is your first stepping-stone to success! After just a short time, you should take our home grown and harvested produce to the market and earn your first money by selling it. As you sell more, you will soon see more and larger machines in your fleet and be able to grow larger quantities of produce. Gradually, you will even be able to construct new buildings and acquire new fields.
Features
For the first time ever in a farming simulator: Different seasons and yearly planning
Countless original tractors
Campaign mode contains a plethora of missions for hours of engrossing fun. It has it all, from short tasks to extensive missions
Sandbox mode lets the hobby farmer enjoy the game without restrictions - no time pressure or to-do lists"
Ohhhhhh!!! Now with Different seasons!
