Dear Dakka,

I hope I don't piss people off with the vagueness of this request, but basically I have been at a loss with what to do with my Black Templar army since the new space marine codex was released. It is basically a mechanized assault army, but I am unsure on what squads to put in what transports, and particularly over who should lead the army, and where they should be. I need to breathe some fresh life into this army, give them some purpose. I am up for adding new models if need be, espescially some neophytes, and a chapter master. Any help would be gratefully received.

I have:

3 Rhinos, two of which have Razorback turrets if needed.
2 Land Raider Crusaders
An old school predator annihilator (TL LC, LC), predator destructor (AC, HB) and a vindicator.

2 10 man crusader squads with bp/ccw, plus 1pf and a mg in one, a flamer in the other.
12 crusaders with bolters that I either field as 6 man squads (one with PG and LC, one with PG and ML) or as a 10 man squad with a PG and one of the heavy weapons.
7 Terminators, 5 with LC, 2 with TH
1 Terminator Chaplain - crozius and SB

An assortment of models, that could find a role as either sword brethren (sergeants), chapter master/captains, honour guard or vanguard vets without jumpacks. This is mainly where I am stuck, I don't really know what these guys should be.

Thanks!

I'd run minimalist Razorback Crusader Squads with melta guns for scoring, use one of the TH Termies as Chapter Master SE-TH with bells and whistles for a solid punch, and then load him up in a Land Raider to assure he reaches the other side.

Other than that, I'd get another Predator Annihilator maybe to support your mobile list and then flesh out everything else procedurally.

Some flyers wouldn't hurt too.

Black Templars are made for close combat so you could build your army around that concept. I'd run the Chaplain with the terminators in the land raider and have my tactical squads outfitted with long ranger fire power (depending on what you expect to face). If you have the extra points give the tactical squads a rhino so they can run away or grab an objective if need be. Maybe look into getting Chaplain Grimaldus and some jump pack guys. I dont know if they're super competitive but they're fun to play with. Grimaldus comes with these servitors that provide units withiin six inches a 6+ invul save. If you have the money to throw around, you could try out assault centurions. You could pair them with Grimaldus or your terminator chaplain and have tons of fun. Also don't forget your chapter tactics.
