Hi, me and a friend are looking to get into playing 40k.
We have decided to go halfs on the dark vengeance box with him taking the dark angels and me the chaos.
From what i have read the chaos force is significantly smaller points wise so we have planned to get a 750pts force up and running using the boxset with the odd extra models when needed .

Can anyone give me an idea of the forces pointswise straight out of the box?

I am going to convert the minis into a nurgle army and would like some ideas of a solid 750pts list, heres what i have come up woth so far

HQ
Chaos lord
mon, bike, gift of mutation, powerfist, lightening claw
150pts

Troops
Plague marine squad
Champion, powerfist, 4 marines, 2 melta guns
165pts

Plague marine squad
Champion, powerfist, 4 marines, 2 plasma guns
175pts

Fast attack
Chaos spawn
Mon
36pts

Chaos spawn
Mon
36pts

Heavy support
Oblitorator
Vet of the long war, mon
79pts

Oblitorator
Vet of the long war, mon
79pts

Total 720 pts

So i still have 30 points to spend, maybe i could shuffle some stuff and add another spawn? Maybe another plague marine or tool up the champ with a plasma pistol.

How would this list fair against a the dark vengeance dark angels army?
We both have very little knowledge of the 40k game as i have always been more into modelling so i will be helping him form an army list aswell.

Thanks for your time.

Are you using anything from the boxset, because everything will have to bought as nothing you mentioned comes in the boxset. Unless your converting the chaos lord to use the weapons from the chosen?

I also have little experience with the game, so I can't give any constructive criticism, but I must say, I do like your list.

I have a few models kicking around but the main reason for the boxset is to give my friend a solid base for his army and some stuff for me to play around with.
Chosen will most probably become plague champions and the warlord looks like an excellent nurgle sorcerer. Cultists might get made into nurgle followers/necromunda gang

The DA portion of the box set is a fantastic value for your money - I bought two boxes myself just for the Terminators, Tactical Squad, and Bikes. I haven't been much impressed with the Chaos portion, though the HQ and Helbrute is pretty cool.

I already have around 15 of the metal(now finecast) plaguemarines knocking around as well as another 5 or so i converted from plastic marines.
I also have a converted lord on bike i need to finish, the spawn will be made out of skaven island of blood rat ogres with a bunch of greenstuff and lastly in toying with making the obliterators out of terminators.
All the foundation for my army is almost together, the boxset is mostly for my friend who has nothing yet and the small rulebook.

Any advice on my list and how it would fair against the dark angels is much welcome.

A few comments about your list.

Overall, solid list with good choices. You can use the chosen models for the plague champs.

You do not need veterans on the oblits since they are running in units of 1. Vets is mostly good for leadership +1, but since they are a unit of 1 you don't need to worry about them breaking when there are losses-they will already be dead!

That saves 6 additional points for you, leaving 33 to spend.

You are light on troops, so a minimal cultist squad would be the best bet. They can hold backfield objectives. The models from the DV set work well here. You can take ten with the shotgun champ for 52 points I think. So you need to find 19 points somewhere. I would drop GoM on the lord for starters. Dropping MoN on the two spawn would get you what you need, and they are still T5 with 3W.

The other option is to change a power fist for an axe on one plague champ. Power fists are good, but very expensive. The axe is still +1 S and AP2, so good for challenges and such.

I would experiment with both options since you are in friendly games.

This gives you a solid and balanced list at 750 pts.

Good luck,
Aeglos

Ok thanks alot for your input, i have revised my list and it currently stands as.

Hq

Chaos lord
Bike, mon, power fist, lightening claw
140pts

Troops

4x Plague marines + champ
2x plasma guns, power axe
165pts

4x plague marines + champ
2x melta guns, powerfist
165pts

10 chaos cultists + champ
Shotgun
52pts

Fast attack

Spawn
Mon
36pts

Spawn
Mon
36pts

Heavy

Obliterator
Mon
76

Obliterator
Mon
76

That totals 746pts

I considered dropping power weapons altogether on the plasma squad, having it as a hang back and shoot squad but i think it will earn itself in challenges.
In a low point army like this is it worth me taking meltas? Or should i try run two squads on plasmas an

One melta squad and one plasma squad are good choices. Plasma is short range, of course, so getting to any vehicles can be tricky with footslogging troops. If you magnetize, you can experiment with both. I would probably go for all plasma and let the obliterations tackle the odd vehicle or two at this point level. But, that will cost you points.

I think it is solid. You can do auto gun updates to a few cultists to round out odd leftover points. That gives them a little more ranged shooting. Or possibly the heavy stubbed or flamer.

I would double-check you point totals. I think the PM squad with melta and power axe is cheaper than the squad with plasma and power fist...

Good luck,

I think it would be abit of a squeeze trying to fit the plasmas into both squads, i think i will stick with the meltas as a backup in case the oblits get wiped out for any reason.
I chose to put the powerfist in the melta squad and the power axe in the plasma squad because i will most probably be throwing the fist squad into cc more often and the meltas will be more useful around that range popping vehicles and troops.

I dont have my codes in front of me but i think a power axe and two plasma guns are the same price as a fist with two meltas as meltas are cheaper than plasmas and power weapons are cheaper than powerfists.

I have been helping my friend put together a dark angels list that he will be using to battle my nurgle list, we have created this out of what comes in the dark vengeance box and a couple of other random models to boost numbers.

Hq

Company Master Balthazar
combi plasma, power sword
115pts

troops

deathwing terminators
x4+ sgt
assault cannon, chainfist
245pts

tactical squad
x9+sgt
veteran sgt, melta bombs, plasma pistol, plasma gun, plasma cannon
200pts

tactical squad
x4+sgt, plasmagun

85pts

Fast attack
ravenwing
x2 + sgt
veteran sgt, plasma gun.

If im correct that comes out at 750pts

Can anyone advise me whether or not this is a solid list? I dont have a dark angels codex so i might be wrong on some things and im not sure about all the army options.

Can terminators capture objectives? Balthazar unlocks them as a troop choice and im just curious if they can.

Thanks

If you have never played before, the DV Boxed set gives you some ideas on how to deal with the Dark Angels that accompany it.

Dont count out the Cultists that come with it, they,at the very least, will eat up fire for you, and the Helbrute (Dreadnaught) is a nasty piece of machinery.

I will defo be using the cultists in my nurgle listas it Saves having to hold back my plaguemarines for objectives.
Im not to fond of the hellbrute model but maybe when i expand to 1000pts i will addd one to the list or i will get a forge world contemporer dred and use it as a counts as or converted.

Any advice on the dark angel list?

Thanks

My very first game of 40K (Back when Moses was downloading the 10 Commandments) I played the DA. They are a shooting army IMO. If you can add some Devastator squads then you would be in business.
I too recently purchased Dark Vengence, if I cant trade away the troops that come with it for Orks, than I am going to convert the DA to Chaos Marines as they are more my fighting style.
But if you like shooty armies, the Dark Angels excel at this.

Me and a friend have bought a boxset so we can play. I have never actually played a game but i have modelled with 40k alot.
Im building the nurgle list near the top out of the csm and my friends taking the dark angels, we really want to use whats in the box and get an army set up before we invest in anything else just yet but we do plan to expand.
I have countless unfinished projects but j want to actually finish this one haha

Well than if you have a lot of 'unfinished projects'...welcome to the world of 40k! I've yet to meet a player who doesnt have unfinished projects in the works. You'll fit in nicely! hahaha
