I recently got 18 ogres in a trade (with HW/shield or great weapon) plus a captain.

I had a few questions about building the army. Are the command upgrades really useful for Ogres? I don't have the components, but if I buy big into Ogres, I could just buy six units of command. Is mantic planning on selling the metal bits seperatly or are their any coversions out there?

A full Ogre army seems like it would use the best models from Kow in Ogres, fleabags, chariots, etc. Shame about the gobbos, but there are plenty of options out there. Is an ogre army good as a stand alone? Or do they work better with Kingdoms of men? I think I'd almost rather have access to cannons and cavalry, but what are others thoughts? Clearly, I can just base the ogres to match both Men and goblins, and have my toes in three armies.

Well, standards aren't generally used in power lists, musicians are (not in every unit, though, just in one out of every 2/3.. the idea is to multi-charge if you can, and excess musicians are wasted if you do since the effect doesn't stack), but ogres from the ogre list don't need them since they count as having them anyway via their army special rule.

So, you'd think you might not need any command.. *but*:

- Pipes of Terror is a very useful magic item for an army like ogres, especially given to a regiment, and the musician is sculpted with bagpipes which is perfect. So, you're going to want at least one.

- Army Standard Bearers. You're going to need models for them.

- Then there's the champion bitz which can be useful for converting character models.

I'd say you'd want about 3 command sets, probably not much more than that though. Depends how big the army is.

I've had luck ordering just bits from Mantic; I shot them an email and they sold me bunches of fleabag rider command bits and archer upgrades. It's worth a shot if you'd just like to get some metal bits.
