Hey guys. As you can see, I really want to start a Shaltari Tribe army for Dropzone Commander. What units should I buy first. The starter pack costs alot and the teams they give you are not my favorite. Thanks for any help.

If you're not set on shaltari I'd be willing to cut you a really nice deal for some magnetized PHR.

Pricey though it may be, the starter army is probably the best bet. You need a little bit of everything in DzC and the starter gives you that: Infantry to claim objectives, AA and tanks to do the fighting as well as the all-important gates.

Ok, I have decided to get the starter pack, I found it for like 80 dollars. Are there any recommended units I should get after the starter pack?

I would play a few games with the starter pack first and then see what you feel like you need. For instance if you're having a hard time with objectives then maybe some more infantry, or
some more tanks or a strider if you feel like you need more muscle. A command strider might be an idea too. Bear in mind you will need gates for most things as well

Ok thanks man. I might go with a command strider and an ocelot.

I would honestly try to get my hands on as many AA or walkers as you can get. Its kind of complicated to explain the exact dynamics, but after you play a few games you'll see that your ability to kill the enemy's airpower, and then turn your AA guns on his infantry is a game winning strategy. Anti-armor has a niche, but its not the focus of the game.
But as others have said, a little bit of everything isn't a bad thing. The game doesn't lend itself, nor allow you, to spam a single 'power unit.'
And the starter set may seem expensive, but its over 500 points worth of stuff. In 40k terms, thats 1/3 of your army. The game seems expensive, until you realize in most GW games 100 dollars doesn't even buy you 100 points worth of some types of highly desirable models, heh.

Ya, that's why I am starting to get out of the GW area for money reasons. Im planning on getting some light grav tanks. They are fast, anti air, and they can be equipped with an anti infantry variant. Best of both worlds. Thanks

After the starter set I suggest a coyote and building up a little redundancy. Some more infantry (preferably with a spirit so that you have both havens and spirits to utilize), another standard unit, and another AA unit of some sort. You can go with either another squad of tomahawks or the new tarantulas. When you feel ready I also suggest that you throw in a jaguar or two. They are extremely good.
Edit: Also firedrakes. I love those things.

I'm trying to get into DzC as well and cant decide between The PHR or The Shaltari. I assume they play differently but are there any distinct draw backs I should know about?
Any help would be much appreciated

They are pretty much polar opposites. Shaltari are arguably the quickest faction, and potentially the squishiest if you can't roll 5+ saves. They also have the weakest weaponry.
PHR are arguably the slowest faction with above average weaponry, and surprisingly durable.
Other than that, I don't think there's any distinct drawbacks. And as Hawk introduce more units in to the game, each faction seems to be getting a little more bland (in a good way) - Shaltari are getting more durable, slower units while PHR are getting some weaker but faster units, etc.

The new units each race is getting to fill each niche aren't changing the army immensely, though.
The fast PHR units, for example, have drawbacks and are mostly support - one doesn't even have any guns, it just nerfs enemy shooting.
The Scourge are getting an armor 10 walker tank - doesn't compare directly with the PHR walkers, but helps fill a niche. Scourge are still a fast army with their own style.
I like the game - just wish it would catch on faster!
