I like an opinion regarding the sculpture of the original metal version verus the new plastic corresponding figures. I always prefer the miniatures to be in metal. IMO, the original metal version of Malifaux is not bad at all. I don't quite understand why everything will have to be changed and the newer version does not necessary mean better. Take Rasputina for example, the new one is no comparison to the alternative version. Even the original version looks more dynamic than the new one. I wish Wendigo to be on its own rather than being attached to another figure being attacked. The new Ice Gremlins do not look that much better than the old one. Only the Ice Golem is a marked improvement eventhough it is not as sinister looking. How do people feel about other sets?

Well, kind of depends, i prefer the plastics for building, even with the small bits, compared to the old metal ones. I don't like some of the small spindly bits in the metal kits.

Looks wise I think it's really personal, I don't like the new wendigo much either but the rest of the Rasputina kit I think looks better, especially the gamins. On the other hand, the Latigo posse and Kiray are imo not nearly as good looking. The only thing I do find, and that is with more of the modern plastic kits, not just Wyrd's, is that for some reason the sculpts seem to have lost some "character" . That however, as I said is just a personal gut feeling :p.

The guild judgement set is real nice apart from plastic lady j, she is awful compared to either of the metals.

Rasputina crew is a massive improvement as is Seamus and Lilith. Misaki crew is bad. Those are only ones I have worked with so far though.

Detail (level), dimension (size for cash, depth), and posing (their ability to get an action pose): plastics are indisputably better.

Proportions (how consistent size is on one model and with others in the line): plastics are usually better.

Character (creative choices rather than technical merit): depends.

I like the new plastics. Enough that I'll be getting quite a few things new as they come out.

With liliths crew (and most the the nephilium in general) I much prefer the new sculpts.

Dat mature...

Yep, I think the Nephilim line was one of the most improved in the new edition.

I think it just depends on your opinion, some of the older metal ones where a pain to put together because of their small size and detail. So the plastics are an improvement over that in my opinion. But while I am just sticking to the Guild, I think the new plastic models for everything seem pretty good, they have a different flavor compared to the metal models though.

The plastics are easier to work with but imo they lack the detail of the metals. But I think that's the case most of the time anyway.

As for the poses, that's really just personal preference and it varies for me on a week by week basis!

Yeah, the plastics suffer in terms of level of detail, particularly in the face. The shallowness and lack of undercuts really causes "flat face syndrome". For example, the new Lilith's face is just some eyes and vaguely defined lips. They need to go back to slightly more exaggerated facial details in order for them to come through. I greatly prefer the material to work with, paint, and maintain (fewer chips), but so far don't see myself replacing any metal masters. Maybe its the use of digital vs. real sculpts. I imagine the renders look just fine blown up 50 times on a monitor. However they end up looking like nothing on the table unless you bring a magnifying glass.

I personally think the original Justice model is very poor, and much prefer the new one. I also am not a fan of the metal Ophelia, especially the face which looks like McMourning tried 'plastic' (metal?) surgery and got it wrong.... I much prefer action poses as opposed to a crew of very 'flat', almost 2d models, so I prefer the new plastics-Hopkins, Taelor, Justice, Ice Golem etc. i never enjoy painting metal, so plastics for me all the way. That said, the original Perdita is stunning, my favourite Wyrd model. I really like the new one, but there's just something awesome about the original

I am personally a huge fan of the updated plastics. I was wavering a bit on the game until the plastic kits came out.

I thought the Rasputina kit was a marked improvement over the original box set. But I also prefer the newer art style over the 1st edition ones. The ice gamin's are better, and feel more alive, the Wedigo model is amazing, the ice golem finally feels chunky and I even liked the more subdued look or Rasputina.

So far I've grabbed three plastic starter boxes and love all the models (Lucas, Raspy, Viks). And each box they release I honestly love. Can't wait to see the next waves of crews (Collette in particular).

Yeah, Collette is one of the boxes I'm most curious about how it'll look in plastic.

Though, I did go on a buying spree to get as many loose rezzer blisters to complement the new crew boxes. After I got those, great kits as they are (aside from the damn Chihuahua, who thought that separating the legs would be a good idea, really:( ) there is a bit more "undead" feel to the old ones. Really doubting whether I should just get the Molly set now or wait for the plastic preview.

As far as the LJ model, I only really like the metal alternate model, the original was a bit silly as is the new plastic model's pose. Speaking of which, will there be alternate plastic poses aswell for the leaders? I can remember seeing an alternate perdita but not sure if any others will follow, is there any news on that?

I definitely prefer plastics through and through. There are hardly any notable sculpts in metal that surpass their plastic counterparts (in my humble opinion, of course).

One of the few metal models that stood out to me was metal Perdita, whose crew I bought just to have her before the plastics come out. Using that box as an example every other model came out less than stellar, especially Papa Loco.

I understand how it feels like some models lose their character, and it really is a gut feeling. The plastics can tend to feel too digital, or at least not artistic in a sense. But then I look at the old Viktorias compared to the new Viktorias and I don't think it's a bad thing, because some models' character isn't up to par.

In the vein of flavor I feel that sometimes you can gain the flavor back through the paintjob. Check out the following link:

http://joelfaux.blogspot.com/2013/09/ben-halford-step-by-step-viktoria.html

Here is an example of a plastic model with a face that seemed to have no character before it was painted (the plastic faces can have a doll like effect).

But back to the topic at hand...

Malifaux has some metal sculpts that I believe aren't at all impressive, like the Pandora and Viktoria Avatars. They do have very nice ones, but it's more miss than hit. The plastics are more hit than miss (still can't get over how funny Hungering Darkness is).

Gertjan, given how they've talked about crew boxes, I'd expect that you'll only see alternate characters as limited edition minis, though I don't think there's been an official word.

I've gotten back into preferring metals, mostly because of the weight; they just feel more solid.

That said I can cope with plastic if it means price drops

Technicilly the plastic would kick the metals's arses, but I still somehow prefer the old metal.

In my opinion the plastics are of a better quality, especially from a painting perspective, you dont have to spend long to get a very high standard paint job on the new plastics.

Saying that the old metals are still very good quality for metal, and i believe the aesthetics of the miniature is entirely opinion based, and with plastics and metals still currently available you have the option, which is always good.

One thing I have noticed though is that for some reason the hair on the metal models is a bit, well, better defined than with plastics. At the least easier to paint, painting metal Perdita's hair was a breeze compared to the TT models.

I strongly prefer the old metals. But I'm very outspoken on the old characterful models not the new generic grimdark, gothic & 3dgy look.

The more experience I have of the plastics the more I prefer the metal ones.

Now the detail on the plastics is great but a lot of them seem far too fragile for gaming pieces; one of my opponents snapped a death marshall off the coffin moving him onto rough terrain, and a few others barely look like they'll survive a foam case.

From what I've heard they are incredibly fiddly to assemble to.

I'm another in the metal camp. Mainly because I strongly prefer the aesthetics of the metals - some of the plastics aren't bad but they all seem lacking in character to me compared to their previous incarnations. I've also heard a lot of complaints about how fragile some of the new plastics are and while the metal models take a lot more preparation I like how sturdy most of them (there are, as always, a few exceptions!) are once you get them on the table.

I won't play using the metal models...the plastics are way better...and this company is going in the right direction to get new players

I have found the plastics are easier to paint as they are a lot less detailed than the metal models. But that lack of detail can cost the model its character.

I'm just excited to get the new Mannequins. You know how hard it is to pin those arms?

That's what I like about the new plastics, is the ease of assembly, in terms of not having to pin every small contact point.

I'm also interested in seeing how they redo models in plastic. Lelu in particular looks odd. And having the plastic being a different style, in the case of the Ronin, make for interesting opportunities.

I also love some of the old models. I picked up the Alternate Lady J, despite not even playing Guild. Original Seamus was wonderful, and I still have a soft spot for the first Sybelle. Something about the new one just doesn't do it for me.

For me it's the new plastics all the way! A couple of weeks ago I made my first Wyrd purchase with the Guild's Judgement. I couldn't believe how the plastics were spot on to the 3D renders. After my box I started looking into the game itself. It looks like good stuff.

The metals are nice, but I've passed them by so many times that I got to give credit to the plastics.

I'm about to buy the viktoria 1e box (because I like those old sculpts too), so I'll be able to do a direct comparison in detail etc when I get it, and really make my mind up.

I just cursed my way through assembling a box of the Depleted. These guys look amazing, but the way the pieces were separated and how they attached made very little sense.

Overall, I would say the newer sculpts are much better (Teddy) and the plastic is leaps and bounds over Privateer Press. The other plastic kit I worked with was amazing. Details were crisp, little to no mold lines, flash in an easily reached spot.

I've not seen any of the metals in the flesh, but they'd have to be damn good to beat the quality of the plastics. The two plastic crews I've built are among the best and most detailed models I've had the pleasure of building and painting.
