Subject: Dakka reviews (an idea for people to write reviews on dakka dakka)
Here at dakka dakka I've noticed a lot of people talking about the current "popular" game reviewers and news sources as being dismal and even not choosing people to play the right games, like getting someone who doesn't like elder scrolls games to play ESO and review it. Also, I've noticed some here at dakka dakka are very good at talking about and giving both their opinion yet keeping it quite neutral when it comes to video games.
So I thought it would be pretty nice idea for some people here to give a short review of new games they interested in, don't care if you think your bad at writing or such, just say what you think and what you hope for this game.
I think this would be a nice community thing for each person to do, you don't have to be "picked" to review or if someone else wrote a review on the same thing. But if you do have strong opinions on something say it if you like.
If you write a review I'll copy and paste it to this topic (spoilered) with your name and any details you want.
To start it I'll write a bit about the Titanfall beta;
Spoiler:
On a lonely valentines day I got my hands on a beta key for the anticipated Titanfall beta, the options and keybindings menu is very good, average for a PC game, quite surprising coming from dev's of infinity ward, but I'm guessing you want to hear about the actual gameplay.
I started my first game with a decent class selection, after playing a bit I noticed my abilities and wepaons weren't really "syncing" well together, a topic I'll talk more about later, I started with a nice cinematic and sequence that began the game in a nice opening that really allowed my team to start as a group and enjoy the normally unimportant start of a game. I clunkily followed a team mate and we nicely engaged the enemy in a realistic fire fight, our grunts engaged the other grunts while the pilots acted as the commanders, spearheading attacks with their boosted attack power and funky gadgets. The initial engagements were mostly pilots carving swats through the grunts but getting stopped by defensive pilots.
The graphics are very nice and the game runs smoothly on your PC which is a far cry from Ghosts...
The real fun happened when a titan landed, unfortunately on the opposing team. I hastily went to the scene of the landing, I died... the titan was a really nice reminder that even though I'm all powerful to the grunts, I can just get stepped on by a walking tank.
Using the titans lack of agility against it, I hopped onto its back and unloaded clips into its back. Successfully killing a titan single handedly I felt all powerful again, and when I got my own titan I felt like god!
Mid-game is the heart of titanfall. those who prefer to tank are in their titans and those who like the fast agile approach are running around on foot. I was still neutral in my role and just did what I found important.
After a few more games, each with pretty awesome stories and good gameplay. I was able to make my class, here's where I got a problem with the pre-made classes. The features in them don't mix well. In my class I used stim's (momentary increased speed) and increase jump/wallhang/wallrun to make a very agile jump class that hops onto titans to rodeo them. These two abilities mix well and allow me to build a specialised class many other abilities mix like this, but none of the premade ones do making the premade classes fairly bland.
My other problem is it's cod equivalent of dumb-downing and unique, smart gameplay. Pick! We all know this wouldn't succeed as a call of duty clone. So personally I think this game needs more in depth features. Such as visual customisation and more unique sci-fi guns. This problem can be fixed with simple new futures to separate it to the game people were obviously going to compare it to.
something else is the, and slightly related to the above issue. Burn cards, single use bad ass gadgets, my first thought was why separate these from the main game? I don't particularly see a big reason why not, to my knowledge the guns available in the burncards are available just not in the beta, and yes I would say the same presumption could be made for the attachments, frankly, I hope so.
A final thing is the future of this game. Will they follow the IW way of map-packs, if so, free like killzone or a fee? I hope they add new weapons and chasis's to continue the diversity of this game. Adding more titan play styles or pilot archtypes like a medic or specifically anti titan role would add more unique play time.
Final verdict;
Lovely game, graphics, unique idea and I think they succeeded. Now the question is how will they progress?
