So I'm going to Stones River in a couple weeks, which is a GT minus or RTT plus. It's 80 plus players but only four games. It's an awesome tournament (I placed fifth last year with Space Wolves, went undefeated but with 4 games it can't really shake out a full winner, which wouldn't have been me, since I got lucky and avoided Drakes), with really fun missions all focused around a Bridge (like the real life Battle of Stones River). It's 1863 points.
Daemons are my current competitive Army, and I've swept through a few RTTs lately running them. However, Daemons are terrain dependent, and Stones River has weak terrain. Also, they aren't allowing Be'lakor (and I've gotten so used to using him lately). So I kind of want to run my Dark Eldar…..sort of…I'm going to borrow a friend's Eldar and run a Beaststar. Here's my take on the list right now.
Farseer (shard of Anaris, Bike)
Eldrad
5 x Dires in a Wave Serpent (shurikan cannon, holofields, scatter laser)
5 x Dires in a Wave Serpent (holofields, scatter laser)
3 x Jetbikes
3 x Jetbikes
5 x Rangers
Wraith Knight (stock)
The Baron
5 x Warriors in a Venom (night shields, extra splinter cannon, trophies)
5 x Warriors in a Venom (night shields, extra splinter cannon, trophies)
5 x Beastmaters with 23 Khymerae
Okay, so brief explanations on a few of the weirder things. Eldrad has 4 rolls, and is very very high odds of getting Fortune. I feel like the 28 model Beastpack can actually keep Eldrad in coherency (which obviously a Seer Council cannot do), so he's worth the points. Plus his redplodement trick is super awesome when going first. Lastly, his warlord trait is actually awesome when facing a beta strike army (like Necron fliers), because you can turbo the Serpents and get a 2+ cover on an AV12 vehicle. Which is insane. Against other Armies the Bikeseer can be the warlord and roll in the BRB.
The Rangers are primarily there because the South East has perhaps the only relevant Ravenwing player in the world, Sean Williams. He won Stones last year, as well as Maul in the Mall and Redstone Rumble, he is super good with that Army. I know the Army is generally considered a joke, but it has the ability to Scout up and wipe the entire Beastpack off the board in one shooting phase. The Rangers prevent that with Scout block. Against other opponents they are an outflanking scoring unit, which is not useless. Plus Doom works well with Sniper Rifles (really well actually).
The Venoms….well I toyed it was basically take a third Wave Serpent or take two Venoms. Venoms add a ton of anti infanry fire power at range (obviously), and it's two more mobile scoring units. 7 Scoring units is no joke at 1863 points, and while a third Serpent would be amazing, 24 poison shots is a nice substitute. I took Trophies because why make Eldrad use his Runes of Witnessing if you don't have to (and the Bikeseer doesn't have them).
