Been Around the Block

Portsmouth, RI

I have been playing 40k about a year now, its a great hobby and I enjoy every part from building and painting, to collecting and playing. I have a local place I play at and I have a blast.

I have been here for a bit and read whenever I get bored. One thing I have seen a few times is people referring to sportsman ship point marked by the opponent in what I am assuming is a tournament setting. Now there is something that sounds fun. I want to check out a real tournament, not just a local game shops 4-8 player event, but a real event with judges and score cards and all the nerdy fix'ins.

Anyone know of any big events like this on the east coast? I'm from RI so really would prefer anything in Mass, Conn, or RI, but really anything north of jersey I'd like to hear about. Thanks in advance.

There are a great deal of large 40k events on the east coast, it's a great location to be in. Unfortunately a fair amount of them happen in the late summer / fall so you may have to wait a bit for them.

-NOVA Open is the biggest east coast event, it happens in late August right next to Washington DC. It's a full convention with vendors, seminars, and various other games being played. http://www.novaopen.com/ Many of the other east coast GT's use NOVA's mission format.

-The next GT in the east that I can think of is the Delawwarr Open in Newark, DE. It's the first year for the event and it will be in April. http://delawarropen.com/. It's a NOVA style tournament (I'll get to that in a sec).

-Killadelphia is in June, just outside of Philadelphia, PA. http://www.killadelphiaopen.com/. Last year was their first GT and it was an outstanding time. They had it at VFW so there was cheap beer on site which was excellent. Also is a NOVA style tournament.

-ConnetiCon is in July I believe and has a 40k GT. Pretty close to you in Hartford CT http://connecticon.org/

-Battle for Salvation is in October in Palisades NY. It's a 40k only event but has a great showing every-year. http://www.battleforsalvation.com/ (their website probably won't be updated for 2014 for a while yet I'd guess). Also a NOVA format tournament.

-11th Company GT is in November, also a 40k only event run by the 11th Company Podcast in Myrtle Beach, SC. Also a NOVA format tournament.

-Da Boyz is also in November, a lot closer to you in Canandaigua, NY http://daboyzgt.com/

-Templecon is probably the closest event to you, but it just happened a few weeks ago. The 40k GT is just part of a larger con there so they have other game systems being played as well as a more general scifi convention. It's in Warwick RI http://www.templecon.org/14/

I may have missed one or two, but that's the big ones I can think of. If you keep an eye on the tournament discussions page though you'll often find RTT's with a more competitive crowd if that's what you're looking for. Out of the range of areas you listed, you'll namely be interested Templecon which won't happen again until next February, or ConnetiCon in July.

Plainville MA

Battleground Games & Hobbies runs sizable events just about every month. They range in size from 14-40, have score cards, a judge and appearance judge, and all that nerdy goodness.

I'd like to think our Plainville MA location has one of the most active communities in the region. It's very close to the RI boarder too.

You can check out our website here.
Our message boards are here.
Our Facebook page is here.

Our next event is a 1000pt "Attacker / Defender" tournament this weekend (2/22). Details can be found here. It's not going to be very large (14-20 players), but it'll be fun.

The night our community gets together to play casually is Thursday. Maybe you can swing by and check things out?

If you've got any questions feel free to email me at ChaseLaq@gmail.com

Good luck!

Really have to recommend the Battleground events, as well as the stores themselves (Abbington and Plaineville MA). I just started going to tournaments this year, beginning with their events in Jan and Feb. Lots of good people to game with!

I live one town over in Bristol, and heartily recommend checking out a tournament at Battlegrounds in Plainville. It's an easy drive (a few exits into MA up 95), and absolutely worth the short trip. Their events are usually big, competitive but friendly, and always well-run.

The MechaniCon is a fantastic event.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Mechanicon-2014/139581129046

It's an event that is geared more for the hobbyist. If the only way you enjoy an event is by bringing your toughest, hard-as-nails, beatsticking army than this event is NOT for you.
