Hi all!

I'm new to 40k and MWG in general. I'm just quitting Magic: The Gathering after playing for 8+ years. I sold off all of my Legacy staples and Dual Lands so I'm ready to move on to a new hobby.

A friend of mine introduced me to the idea of playing 40k while we were deployed and now the only things left to do are choose an army and start playing.

I look forward to learning from all of the veterans and growing as a player here.

Welcome to dakka dakka!
If I may ask, why did you decide to quit MTG? Just curious.

Well then, welcome to Dakka and welcome to wargaming!

Have you thought of what army you would like to use?

Thanks!
I quit MTG because I travelled a lot and my wife wanted me closer to home. Standard seems stale to me right now and there isn't a good Legacy play group near me.
40k offers me the opportunity to paint, convert, tinker and just mess with my army without even having to leave the house. MTG doesn't allow that opportunity (other than paying hundreds for some digital playing cards). My wife is interested in the painting/modeling aspect as well, so who knows - maybe she'll get into it too.
I started to ramble but I hope I answered your question.

After some thought, I have actually been back and forth between three armies. Orkz, Dark Eldar and Dark Angels, in that order.

I keep talking myself down from just buying a bunch of Orkz and putting them on the table. Winning is kind of important to me and I haven't seen Orkz win ANY of the batreps or games I've watched.
I worry that if I take the army that appeals to me the most (in culture and "fluff") that I will do nothing but lose and come to hate the game for it.
I've also heard that Orkz will be getting a new Codex soon and not to worry about their strength level right now because their Codex is older than a lot of other armies.
I'm pretty on the fence about it because I don't want to dump a ton of time into painting 60 boyz and then never use them again.

Dark Eldar appeal to me because they seem underplayed in my region and look like an absolute HOUSE. I understand that they are more of a tactical army than Orkz tend to be but I like that sometimes.
The thing holding me back here is that I don't like the way their miniatures look at all. They just don't tug at my heartstrings.

Dark Angels just because they are the only other army to really appeal to me in any way. I like their fluff and they seem to be pretty balanced.

Nothing tugs at me heartstrings like da Orkz though. I've got a large gaming allowance from my sale of my MTG collection (32000 give or take) but I would like to save a fair amount of that and put the rest into a huge army I will enjoy for years to come. Maybe some guidance from the veterans could help me make my decision.

First, welcome to Dakka and to 40k.

Second, Orks rock. I win with them all of the time versus very competitive lists/players. All that you really need is a solid grasp of tactics. This is something that many ork players I have seen tend to lack*, thus their performance in batreps.

If you like converting models, Orks are definitely for you. Their vehicles are lots of fun to build, convert, and paint.

*note that I am in no way disrespecting fellow ork players in general, just the erroneous concept that ork 'tactics' consist solely of either going as fast as you can straight at the opponent and assaulting, or slogging an enormous green tide(often a gray tide) across the table.

Anyway, sounds like you really want to run Orks, so I say do it!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka
